How to get offshore work, frustrated.

Hey all, just wondering if anybody has any experience in working offshore. I've been a towercrane operator for the last 11 years with equivalent banksman/slinger experience. Since work has dried up in the industry I thought I'd turn my hand to driving an offshore crane on the rigs so I went about doing my research and soon realised that I had no chance of driving an offshore crane unless I started at an entry level position and worked as a roustabout and moved to banksman and then crane operator which was cool I had no problem doing this. So i started looking in roustabout work and was told i'd need a BOSIET cert a MIST cert and a valid medical so I did all of these which cost me over 2k. then went about looking applying for jobs and was more or less told that I had no chance of getting offshore work, what a kick in the nuts. Today I rang a company in Aberdeen who were looking for rousabouts and other entry level deck workers, I rang and spoke to a lady who told me that to even get a job with them in any position on dect i would need a banksman ticket my own ticket which is for onshore work is uselss as it's a different authority for offshore so i must do another course which is going to put me over the 3k mark on course costs so far not including petrol and accomodation cost.
what I want to know is have I got a hope of getting work or am I ****ing my hard earned money down the toilet. I really want to get offhore and start a new career I'm 35 now and I don't see the construction industry turning back around any time soon and anyway the offshore work was always something I really wanted to do because of the better money and working conditions. currently i'm working as a nightclub bouncer/doorman but i don't really want to be doing this work it's only out of necessity I was a fitness instructor before I turned to towercranes but there is no money in that work either. I have been applying for jobs offshore for months now and have only had one reply which was to say I had no offshore experience and sorry
anyone got any experience in this industry or any advice?

yea i've tried all the agencies but same result no experience no chance, how does anyone get experience without getting a ftrst start, it's not as if i am new to working with cranes i've been operating some of the biggest towercranes in the country for years and i can guarantee you that the pace we were forced to work at would be far less than we would be doing on a rig as their main priority is safety rather than speed , during the boom times i was often up in a crane at 5am and only down at 4pm for my first break and not finishing untill 11pm at night it was crazy stuff but you couldn't say jack because they would just tell you to hit the road.

would love to get back into importing japanese cars which i used to do on the side but the japanese yen is too expensive to buy at the moment.

just keep pestering agancy's there is lots of work offshore,
transocean if you are looking for a start with a company but they usually recruit through agencies likehttp://www.omsau.com/
http://www.petrofac.com/index.asp?pageid=20#ref_career.html
http://www.atlanticresourcing.com/
there are loads of agencies in Aberdeen, just keep contacting them and annoying them basically and they will son get fed up and give you a start,
i started with Global Santafe which then became transocean as roustabout and went to Motorman, but left to Join PSN as a rigger,
i have now moved to Woodgroup PSN and now Production operator working 2 weeks offshore and 3 weeks at home, and only been offshor 6 and a half years, once you get a start its easy
and about the safety first not always that wasy in drilling, when we were deck crew it wast quickest first....safety 2nd

hope this helps

just onshore towercrane op and banksman tickets, I have been trying to save for more courses like banksman and forklift but with kids a mortgage and other stuff it's really tough. I thought i could get a job as a roustabout and then do the other tickets eventually and then get my offshore crane licences but they want banksman tickets for roustabouts even though you are tecnically not a banksman. I have over 10 years experience as a banksman and Towercrane operator with no accidents against me.

Rousty/deckcrew are banksman mate, even that course has stage 1/2/3 :wallbang: ( so you would need stage 1) :smthumbupÂŁ646

For crane you could go straight for stage2, then once offshore stage3:smthumbup

Towercrane is so different from the offshore semi crane, whole different ball game:lol::smthumbup

It's not easy getting offshore, do what most did lie :lol:

I wouldn’t bother with the FLT training, that will be done in-house when you get a start. It’s a long hard slog getting a start offshore, I was 5 months calling the main agencies every second day. You have to be polite and persistent on the phone and always follow up with an email every couple of weeks. It worked for me, 7 years past and never looked back.

It may be worth looking into a Painter/Blaster course at RGB (Stork), my wee bro did it last week and they basically offered everyone on the course a job. Might be worth making some enquires. All you need is a trip under your belt, doesn’t make any difference what its doing, Painting, Blasting, Steward etc.

Best of luck, and stick with it. To many people give up and end up regretting it in years to come.

In Ireland mate. I sent a c.v to a company in Calgary Canada where there is plenty of construction work and good pay. I can get about 1900 CAD for 40 hours and there is guaranteed overtime on time and a half aswell. I took a call from a visa organiser today and the wheels are now in motion for a move to Canada, Ireland is so screwed right now that I don't see a future with me earning any decent money. It's going to be tough leaving my wife and two kids here but they will be over to me in the summer and I'm hoping I can convince her to stay for the few years that i'll be there. I can only go for a 5 year visa now as I am to old at 35 for a working visa but there is a shortage of crane ops so i'll get in no problem. Upside I have relations who are from there and they have an empty house from Jan 1st to March 1st which they would like me to look after if i'm there and I'll have the use of a Toyota Tacoma pick up aswell for as long as I need to get my own wheels. Calgary also has a booming oil industry so it could be easier to get employment offshore there then i'll have the vital offshore experience needed to get a job in the North sea. I will hate to leave my wife and kids here but my wife has a job for life here so she would be reluctant to leave it behind but being a house husband is depressing me I think once she sees what a great place clagary is she may stay for a year or two untill I have enough money saved.

Always lots of people wanting the oil spoils :D Quite fancy going back to work for an oil company for a while for double spoils (ÂŁÂŁ) but time away and the thought of hard graft puts me off
Rov tech courses seems to be a guarenteed way of getting a job if your mechanically minded theres an extreme shortfall of workers in the rov sides of things at the moment ;) http://www.theunderwatercentre.co.uk/
