Hey all, just wondering if anybody has any experience in working offshore. I've been a towercrane operator for the last 11 years with equivalent banksman/slinger experience. Since work has dried up in the industry I thought I'd turn my hand to driving an offshore crane on the rigs so I went about doing my research and soon realised that I had no chance of driving an offshore crane unless I started at an entry level position and worked as a roustabout and moved to banksman and then crane operator which was cool I had no problem doing this. So i started looking in roustabout work and was told i'd need a BOSIET cert a MIST cert and a valid medical so I did all of these which cost me over 2k. then went about looking applying for jobs and was more or less told that I had no chance of getting offshore work, what a kick in the nuts. Today I rang a company in Aberdeen who were looking for rousabouts and other entry level deck workers, I rang and spoke to a lady who told me that to even get a job with them in any position on dect i would need a banksman ticket my own ticket which is for onshore work is uselss as it's a different authority for offshore so i must do another course which is going to put me over the 3k mark on course costs so far not including petrol and accomodation cost.
what I want to know is have I got a hope of getting work or am I ****ing my hard earned money down the toilet. I really want to get offhore and start a new career I'm 35 now and I don't see the construction industry turning back around any time soon and anyway the offshore work was always something I really wanted to do because of the better money and working conditions. currently i'm working as a nightclub bouncer/doorman but i don't really want to be doing this work it's only out of necessity I was a fitness instructor before I turned to towercranes but there is no money in that work either. I have been applying for jobs offshore for months now and have only had one reply which was to say I had no offshore experience and sorry
anyone got any experience in this industry or any advice?
