in my past experience with any car. high mileage isn't always a problem. but a nice heavy service folder with it would be a good idea. you want to know whats been done to the car in the past. clutches, oil changes. other parts that get the usual wear and tear. buying an evo from a mature owner with maybe only 1-2 previous would be good too.

the higher the mileage, the less they go for. unless they have been modded to the teeth. if you go for a high mileage i'd say a completely standard car would be best.

saying that its sometimes better to get a standard example whatever the mileage. then you know its fresh and should have some life left in it.

low mileage isn't always the best especially with older cars as they are not used properly which can cause more problems than ever, with perished rubbers, mechanical partsn not being freed up due to lack of use etc etc etc. unless they are stored in a heated garage all the time. i mean my evo 8 has 58k on the clock. but just check out my thread. its a right neglected mess. haha.

Evo 5s must be 14/15 years old now so 80/90K is not a lot, and some mileage may be in kilometers, i would worry more about the body work and the dreaded rot setting in....

 

thats another good one. engines and parts are easy to replace. bodywork isn't so easy.

I've just bought a 5 with 60k on it,you would think it was 6 year old not 13 year old,me personally would try and pick a 5 up with no more than 70k on the clock.:smthumbup

 

buy the car not the paperwork. people sometimes place to much importance on paperwork. ive seen cars with little or no paperwork that are lovely but ive seen alot more with loads of paperwork that are pigs!!! i went to buy an m3 convertible a while back that had every stamp in the book and 2 owners from new, 65000 miles and was described as being as new. there wasnt a straight panel on the car, it had been in a major accident with the osf inner wing and chassis being replaced and not well either!! the current owner insisted they knew nothing of the damage and said they trusted the previous owner as it was a family friend...you can always tell a nice car, but paperwork can be made up very easily...

 

Hi dude ive a 8mr with 60k+ on it (i have it only a few months) and it is a very nice car to drive. I did have to replace the ayc pump but that didn't put me off it. Take it for a spin your heart strings will be pulled when you find the right car.:smthumbup

 

My IV has nearly 160k km's on it now, its my daily driver so most of my mileage is just 80-100kph a to b driving, thats another thing to keep in mind with mileage, a low mileage one with 60k miles might have had the ring driven out of it for every one of those miles, high mileage like mine could have a fairly easy life. Judge on the individual car, even if you can't get someone who knows a lot about evos specifically, try and bring someone who has a lot of experience in the trade (mechanic or something like that that would have a pretty good feel for how a car drives) and you should still be able to find a nice fresh example.

 

I have a starlet turbo down the yard. 1995 with 147km on it that has the sweetest engine.

 

I would say resale would be your main worry, there are plenty of low mileage examples about but you will pay more but maybe lose less?

 

Depends on the past owners attitude when your viewing the car also, you will get to know if he is an enthusiast or just owns an evo, My car is a Uk import and has just over 120k miles on the clock, and i never had a bother with it, just the usual perrisables, tyres, clutches, brakes etc..its 2001 so 10 years old now and the paint is in better condition than 2010 cars..? so alot of variables when looking at evos for sale, i definately wouldnt knock it because of the milage anyway..

 

My 8MR has 142,000 miles on the clock now and drives absolutely perfect with no knocks, rattles, squeaks, bangs etc. I'd even go so far as to say that if you put a set of clocks in it with 42,000 miles on it no-one would say anything about it at all.

As has been said, buy the car and not necessarily the mileage. A car that has had lots of short runs, switching on/off before it gets warmed up etc. will have had a harder engine life than one that has been doing regular 200 miles trips up and down a motorway.

My 6 has 73k on the clock, runs perfectly. It's actually for sale too.

 

clock says 174,000 the combo of km's and miles it's about 160,000 of which ive done 115,000 in the last 5 1/2 years.wouldn't drive anything else and its not for sale.take care of the servicing and don't scrimp on the repairs.:smthumbup
