yet another plasma/lcd question
i can't decide whether to get the panny p60 for £900 or go for the sony KDL46W2000U - £2k or similar
while to date I prefer the picture of plasmas - ie better, more saturated colours, no ghosting, etc the plasma is only 1024x768
the sony is 1900x1080 and can display a 1080p signal - also would love a 46" tv (50" too big).
i kind of got caught out buying a SD plasma just before the HD prices dropped loads and would like a more futureproof tv but have real reservations about LCD - my dad has a 40" bravia and i am not impressed!! ive heard 1080 plasmas are circa £5k which is out of the question!!
as stated in an earlier thread, I have the Sky HD box coming thiis weekend and would like the TV beforehand

have been trawling there - bit of an information overload!

digital point have said today they have PX60 in stock although i know most places are out

plasmas definetely look better to me - although i'm no expert, but would love to have a 1080 tv - im stuck hence my post!!!

Have done some investigating on this as i'm going to get my first flat screen soon (how long have they been out!?) thought I wanted an LCD but I have seen a few and the ghosting was awful on the ones I saw, I know the better ones wont do it but I would always be paranoid thinking I could see it ghosting, a bit like i'm paranoid about phantom noises in the evo!
PMSL that's true in one way, i'd be gutted to pay £159 for a Sky HD box, then £10 a month for that difference - i can switch between Channel 402 (S/Sports 2) and 408 (S/Sports 2 HD) and barely notice anything!! All i can see is the White lines stand out a bit more, and any White on players shirts/kit shows up - looks like the contrast has been turned up to me???duran said:hd on any tv will knock ya socks of my son
It's certainly nowhere near the change from VHS to DVD for instance!

Where can you get a hd box for £159? I been speaking with sky and they told me they cost £299 plus installation!! B4stards!!
I cancelled my 42" Viera (but looks like I wouldn't of got it anyway) after I demo'd it the other day I was glad I did.
The only TV that I've been impressed with (for reasonable money) recently was a 32" phillips cineos. There's also a 40" sony that is 1080 and that was very good (poss the one you spoke of)
Would of gone for the 37" cineos but didn't think it was as good as the 32"
I ended up with a 37" toshiba wlt66, gets pretty good reviews.

Had a fair play with it, took a dvd in to play, played xbox360..

I think by 8th gen all plasmas will be 1080p.
I had to have something in the meantime so bought a 507xd for pennies instead.
Interesting about the pre production bd player, my friends on the inside at pioneer haven't even seen that yet.
As for the guy asking the question. Try to stave off buying a plasma until the end of the year when the 8th gen comes out. As I said, likely they will be 1080p.
LCD still lags way behind plasma imho. Just put two next to eachother.
Also ask yourself how much 1080p content there is. Not much right now, and certainly not for a good while. you had survived with 520i or thereabouts for a long time and now you can readily get 720p, don't expect to see miraculous improvements again on the move to 1080p. If you have to have it get the LCD but I suspect you will be sacrificing the rest of the viewing experience just to say you have additional resolution.

My plasma panasonic px 60 looks fantastic in either setting. Now does my tv support the higher setting?

your tv is a 1080i tv, not a 1080p.
not sure if it is a 42 or a 50, but the likelihood is it has more than 720 vertical pixels.
in 720p the internal scaler will scale the signal coming in so that it refreshes 720p pf information to fill the screen and refreshes that same image each time.
on a 1080i tv, which you have, your upscaling dvd player will send out an image with 1080 vertical pixels to the screen but many of these will be created by the dvd player as a guess based on what is in the surrounding pixels. It has to do this because the source dvd does not have that kind of resolution.
your tv is 1080i meaning it cannot process and display a complete 1080 image and refresh it every frame, so it will refresh odd lines then even lines on successive frames.
on 720 it refreshes the entire image every frame, but it is smaller.
even a 720p image will not be genuine source material unless you are watching a hi def disk on a bd or an hd dvd player, which I suspect you are not.
the quality of the images you see will depend on the quality of the upscaling, and the speed of the vido you are watching. If it is a still image and the scaler is a good one, then 1080i will be better. If you are watching fast moving action such as sports, then i would rather have a 720p signal and display.
If I have this wrong, someone please feel free to correct me, always keen to learn.
