Hi all, so ive had my evo 9 for a few weeks now and decided to put it into my local engine tuner to have it re-mapped to see what power it could make. It has a fully forged 2ltr long rod engine in it which has just been run in. Walbro 225 fuel pump. 3" blitz nur spec exhaust. Tubular manifold. And a piper air filter. He was having trouble mapping it (was on the dyno for around 3hours) and after he mapped it, it made 400/380. But im not happy with the map. For some reason whenever i come off throttle/change gear the engine feels very harsh and abrupt. The tuner then took the car out and said its nothing to do with his map and it must be the uprated clutch in the car. (Even though i didnt have this problem before he mapped it). It is mapped on speed density with the MAF un-plugged. Whereas the last map it had on it last year was mapped on the MAF and made 390/411.
Im looking for someone who specialises in evos and knows what they are doing with them as im not to sure about my local mapper now... i dont mind travelling, but the closer to the south west, or in the midlands is best.
Many thanks

Bit moody to mug your tuner off by name like that. Could be loads of reasons behind what you are describing like boost leak, vac leak etc. There's many good EVO mappers out there nationwide maybe a better question would be to ask who could recommend a good mapper!

Edited... im just after someone who specifically specialises in evos and has a good and time served reputation. I dont want to risk blowing up a 10k+ engine build

What sort of power were you expecting? Sounds about right anyway.
You could put it on different rollers and it read slightly higher figures. Worth checking for leaks anyhow

Yes i may take it to norris designs. Im happy with the power figures, but what im not happy with is the way it drives. Whenever i come off throttle the engine just seems to be very sharp and abrupt. Hard to explain.. its not smooth when you come off throttle. Almost like an engine mount has gone, and it judders the whole car. But it was fine on the previous map and no other work has been done..

I had something similar when I went to aftermarket cams at the same time as getting rid of a vta dv and pops n bangs map. When I shut off throttle to change gear it was like the engine completely shut down and would take a moment for power to come back when I re-engaged the clutch. I'm not sure how much it was there before as I kinda wanted to blame the dv and map.
Turned out the SAS was leaking. That was removed and it is now FAR better but not perfect. When I come off boost the engine seems to die (a little) when I get to throttle fully shut. I've been told that this is a "characteristic" of the 80series and I shouldn't worry.
I'm running OEM ECU with MAF. A twin plate clutch too.
Not sure how similar your spec is but hope that helps.
Oh and I've always gone to CPP who I can not possibly fault :smthumbup

Ye he tried mapping pops and bangs into mine aswell on the over-run but it wasnt working when i test drove it and he said its because i had to hold the throttle on a tiny bit? Never use to have to do that on my evo 8... and its got an exedy twin plate clutch in it too.

What DV do you have on it?

Utter nonsense.

Too many copy cat mappers not really knowing what they tweaking.

Sounds like you better off changing ecu to suit your mapper.

Usually vta dv can stop the pops and bangs from happening. Post a pic up
