how do you make sure they need to be changed , other than the sound ??? can you physically check them

If you rock the wheel top to bottom any play you feel comes from the wheel bearing.
(left to right and you include play in the stearing)

I am not sure if there is a tolerance for the 'play' but it should be very little !
