how fast should my .9 bar evo III go? It also has exhaust and no cat and is 315 horse on paper.
Any ideas?
exhaust & de-cat will yield not much more than 5-10 bhp (at the most) over the standard 266bhp at oem boost level
...so looking at 135-ish mph(could be a bit higher) on standard 15inch wheels

....may say greater on the speedo but power/aerodynamics/gearing etc might not allow it

A stock 6 will get all the way to the limiter in 5th so I would assume your 3 will as well. If the gearing and wheel radius is similar then you could probably squeeze ~150 out of it, although it'll take a while to get there.

The actual speed will depend on the gear ratios and the wheel size of course ;)

e3 5th is: 0.617
final drive is: 5.358
maximum power is at 6000rpm
guessing that tyres will be either 205x40 or 215x40x17

so still maintain that it'll be 135-140ish mph flat out
which may be showing something like 145-150 on the speedo....

Assuming the E3 is running 215/40/17 (the largest of the options) and using those gear ratios, and assuming the limiter is at 7700rpm (the E6 is, dunno about the E3), the theoretical max speed is:

Overall gear ratio = 0.637 * 5.358 = 3.413046

Tyre diameter = (215 * 0.4 * 2) + (17 * 25.4) = 172 + 431.8 = 603.8mm
Tyre circumference = 603.8 * 3.14 = 1896mm

Distance traveled per engine revolution = 1896 / 3.413046 = 555.5mm

Distance traveled per 7700 revolutions = 555.5 * 7700 = 4277350mm
= 4.277km/minute
= 256kmh
= 159mph

smaller tyres (or tyres with smaller sidewalls anyway) will reduce that of course.

I've calculated it at the limiter because the E6 makes it's max @ 6500, yet will push up to 7000rpm in top quite happily (I can confirm this from personal experience). If you can get it all the way to the limiter you'll be edging on 160mph.

If not, it'll be (rpm / 7700) * 159 as a top speed.

PS the E6 will hit 267kmh / 166mph @ 7700rpm on 225/45/17 tyres using the same calculation method ;)

nice maths....will have to put that in my 'calc box'

would be good to prove the theory
IMO....won't get there & I think that's why the reason for the thread start question

Mine used to hit the limiter in top on std boost no problem ( not a quick as it does now mind :) ) which was an indicated 160mph!...factory figures are 150mph max speed so i would think if its at the limiter in top on 15's then you are doing 150mph ...certainly feels it :D....an on 17's then providing you have 40 series tyres on it should be about the same as Rolling radius is very similar.

Just my 2p :D

cheers guys, if I bloody die I hold you lot responsible!!!

I'll give it a bash later and see how I get on.

So would i be right in saying that the first 4 gears are for ludicrous acceleration and 5th gear is miles away so that you can actually take your car on the motorway without it revving it's balls off??? If so then that would make sense. When I hit 5th gear I felt like I was hitting a brick wall and I shat it. I really like the car and I didn't want to think there was anything wrong with it so I just kind of eased of tra la la, dum di dum whilst telling myself that it probably does do 150 anyway.

I just don't really like hitting the 150 as it's instant license loss and if mr fox trots accross the fast lane then it could be instant brush and shovel or instant intercooler malfunction.

My 280bhp stock six hit 7000rpm, and although it was taking its time to go further it still felt like the car would keep going. Given I was coming up on an indicated 160 I did exactly what you did and decided it was time to let it slow down a bit though

PS I make that (7000 / 7700) * 166 = 151mph "actual" (depending on tyre wear and deformation at the road surface). There's no bloody way I'd want to risk that on a public road

I managed to push her to 150 on the speedo, I'm not sure what that would equate to but there was absolutely no budging at all what so ever even when I went down a great big hill the gauge wouldn't move. It's a bit disappointing really but I don't do those speeds very often anway so It's not too bad. It's just not nice to think that 150 is pretty much her full potential no matter what unless I spend £$£$£$£

I will buy it off you at the same money you paid if you're not happy! :) (presuming I have got the right car: white 3 bought from Milton Keynes from a bloke called Steve!?)

You beat me to it! That is a nice 3 at a very good price, lucky git!;)
