as name implies...
external wastegate is not part of the main turbo assembly
has a separate pipe attached/linked to main exhaust or can vent directly to atmosphere
* noisy: yes
* why: to allow very high boost pressures e.g. for drag racing etc
+ flow much more exhaust due to the size and separate pipe, respond quicker & are less prone to failure
