I've got a evo1.

Where can I get more info about upgrading and tuning the engine on it.

Things like changing the air filter and manifold and turbo.

Also places that can do this work for me in Scotland.

hi this is my first post on mlr. i too have an evo 1 and would also like to find out about the first steps to tuning my new pride and joy. i was thinking along the lines of a hks super drago exhaust system , hks ssq dump valve and a hks super induction kit (and yes i do like the look of HKS stuff) Dont know if its any good though any help from more experienced evo owners would be much appriecated.p.s the closest evo tuners to me seems to be TDI in barking essex are they any good or is there 1 closer to me in sevenoaks in kent? thanks again.

Well, I am currently in the process of opening a decent sized workshop in Ashford,Kent.
We are going to specialise in tuning/servicing Jap motors, especially the Evo1-6.

It would be unfair for me to comment on Tdi as they are a direct competitor,
but what I can say is there are a couple of HKS/Blitz dealers offering discount to
MLR members (myself included) so you will save yourself a fair bit of money by
buying from one of us.

Basic parts, like dump valves, exhausts, induction kits, oil changes etc
I am able to carry out myself any time you like; if you want more specialised
work, ill have a decent workshop and mechanic soon. Oh , and our labour rate
will be less than £30p/h.

Right, on the parts side.

Exhaust would be top of my list.

HKS Super Drager - s/steel back box, mild steel joining pipes, quiet, very deep - £545|PLS|v
HKS Hiper - s/steel back box, mild steel joining pipes, a bit louder than s/d £427|PLS|v
Blitz Nur-Spec - not available for 1/2/3

HKS Super Power Flow (induction) £155|PLS|v

HKS SQV £245|PLS|v

HKS Intercooler upgrade £1,415|PLS|v

If you want a chat, drop me a line on 01233 500384, we can discuss discounts/fitting.

Hello chaps and welcome evo1.Justin,I didn't think HKS did a dragger for the 1 as I wanted one, so ended up getting the Hiper Muffler. Are you still up for Boxhill on 7th? Evo 1-I have done some mods to my car and have arranged a 'minimeet' @ Boxhill on April 7th.It would be good to see some fellow evo 1 owners there so we can both get our arses whipped by the 6's.Mind you I'm up to 313 bhp now! Hope I'm still not upsetting the guy who organises the 'official' Boxhill meets.Evo1, check out my thread on 'Boxhill meets' in regional meets.

Don't forget the HKS cams!!!

Also Webcams and Crower from US Eclipses fit.
Consensus is HKS are best if pricey.

Check out the DSM (Diamond Star Motors) websites for tuning info - loads of parts available.

http://www.dsm.org
http://www.roadraceengineering.com
http://www.buschurracing.com

The evo 1,2,3 are like the 2g Eclipse (small inlet port head) but with 16g-350hp (or big 16g for evo3 - 380hp) turbo as standard. Also have better ex. manifold and turbo elbow as standard.
Also 510cc/min injectors as standard.

Best way to check parts compatability is to get a copy of the dsm manuals on CD-rom with the US Mitsubishi CAPS parts ordering software on it. Cross check the part numbers if in doubt.

My budget tuning recipe would be

1. Exhaust - 3 all the way with cat by-pass (or big hi-flow cat from US).
Either off the shelf Jap or custom made in UK (lots of companies out there - should do full stainless turbo back for around 500 notes)

2. Fuel pump upgrade - standard 1 is only 80 lph, 2,3 100 lph. Barely adequate for standard tune - they were really scrimping on this one. Get a 200 lph (minimum) DSM upgrade one. Roadrace do a Nippon Denso - Walbro don't always get a good review. Might also need a new Fuel pump regulator and pressure gauge at this point (B and amp;M do a nice DIY conversion of the standard one or SX,Paxton). Also upgrade the feed line to Aeroquip/Earls can yield good results (ask Custard).

3. Boost gauge and manual or electronic boost controller. Apex is good as RPM mappable for mid range boost increase (maximise torque!)

4. Air-fuel gauge - check out Road race - not that accurate unless $1000 wide band lambda but better than nothing.

5. Air filter - K and amp;N, HKS, etc. Cold air airbox too - or lots of ducting. Also upgrade the pipe to the turbo inlet with a large diameter mandrel bent pipe and silicone hose. Do not remove any honeycombs. Reset the calibration screw in the flow meter to flow more air through the bypass when you get the S'AFC.

6. Intercooler pipes - not sure about the standard evo 1,2,3 but mandrel bent 60mm (2.5 ) pipework is probably better than the standard tinwork.

7. Intercooler - OK till over 400hp required.

8. BOV - as you wind up the boost the standard BOV will leak. HKS or crushed 1g eclipse (Roadrace again!) or other Jap aftermarket.

9. EGT gauge - don't cook that engine/turbo. A very useful tuning tool.

7. Apex S'Afc together with larger injectors (Evo 5 on 560cc/min or Nippon Denso 660cc/min from Roadrace/Bushur) and a rolling road tune. Will push fuel cut higher.
510's will run out of juice at around 330hp max.

8. Cams - HKS with timing wheels. Standard are 252 duration 9.5mm lift.
HKS do 264 or 272 with bigger lift ......
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; HKS 264 intake/264 exhaust |EQU| little improvement, not
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; worth the money. A little more boost is better and
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; cheaper.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| Almost stock, hardly can tell you have cams
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; in.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; HKS 264 intake/272 exhaust |EQU| lumpity lumpity varoom,
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; lumpity lumpity varoom, (VPC) thingy. Sounds like
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; the London Philharmonic orchestra is controlling the
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; idle.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| Consistent pattern, lumpity lumpity varoom
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; HKS 272 intake/ 272 exhaust |EQU| Oh my god, I have a
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; throttle body shaft leak.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| If you gripe about throttle body shaft leak
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; and think that is bad, wait till you get a hold of
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; these combo.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; HKS 272 intake/ 264 exhaust |EQU| why? don't know,
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; people ran these setup before. Do they like it?
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Don't know.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| Don't know, don't have that kind of money to
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; try one.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt;
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Web 546/547 |EQU| Cheaper than HKS, it works. Make your
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; 4 banger sounds like a V-8.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| Sounds badd ass, no consistent rythyms in
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; idle fluctuations. In other words it idles all over
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; the place.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Web 452/228 |EQU| Hmm, you have to pump the gas pedal
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; while starting the car. Kinda like your grandaddy
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; ole Ford F-350 ranger pickup. Well it not that bad.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; If you have VPC, haha, stay far away, not enough
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; vacumm for the
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; car to idle.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| blat blat blat blop blat blop blat, fart arf
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; arf bow wow, blat. Stand alone recommended but not
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; neccesary.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Web 453/228 |EQU| Oh my effing god, what did I got
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; myself in to. I have stock ecu and afc, I go
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; through two batteries trying to start the car. It
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; make my dsm like a honda. V-TEC kick in at 5,000 k
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; rpm.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| For $450.00 bucks. You let me know how it
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; idles. :)
and amp;gt; and amp;gt;
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Crower 220/212 |EQU| Don't do ****, actually lost power
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; compare to stock.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| You pay how much for what cams again?
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Crower 235/232 |EQU| You better off with stock cams,
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; lost power on high end again.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| See Crower grind 220/212
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Crower 242/240 |EQU| Hmm now we're getting somewhere
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; now, almost comparable to HKS 264 combo.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| If you ever heard a car with a bad throttle
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; body shaft leak, you know what I'm talking about.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Crower 242/245 |EQU| hmm supposedly a copy of HKS
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; 264/272. Still not worth the money. They should
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; stick to making rods not cams.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Idles |EQU| Similar to HKS 264/272 combo.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt;
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Conclusion? Remember HKS set the standard. Everyone
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; including Web's copy their grinds and lift. But
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; everyone have their idea's on what is good. All the
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; og's drag racer that run low number have HKS in
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; their car.
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; Crower and Webs get their billet from the same
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; company. Flat chest cams only found in American
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; made cams. Anyone have a set of HKS that cams that
and amp;gt; and amp;gt; is flat chested? For more info... check them out at

9. Rods and pistons. Crower, JE are a good combo - also Eagle, Ross.
Uprated head gasket - Mitsubishi stainless steel one from US or HKS.

10. 20g or bigger turbo. Also Franks from texas turbo, and Forced Performances Greens and Reds.

Other than the APex route the other option is an aftermarket ecu.

Budget - Link, DTA, Emerald, Haltech
Professional - Gems, Motec, DTAPro8, Pectel.

Somewhere along the way an uprated clutch and probably a lightweight steel flywheel would be a good idea. Also some uprated HT leads - Magnecor are nice.

Don't take my list as gospel .There is a lot of info on the web about the DSM cars. Visit the forums and unmask the BS merchants. Read and learn!

LS,
You forgot to add all the prices and tell us the grand total after doing it all in terms of power and torque..... I don't know, some people just don't provide enough information http://www.lancerregister.com/graphics/tonguewink1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >

Couple of things:

-As said earlier, check out all the DSM sites for tuning info.
-264/264 combo made a healthy difference on my Evo 1 with little loss of idle stability.
-Evo 1/2 exhaust manifold is same as crappy 1g eclipse except for a 7cm2 oulet instead of a 6cm2. Change it for an Evo 3 one. Turbine outlet elbow is poor as well. Replace for an Evo 3 one also.
