Mine has done this before, usually during a trackday when it gets very hot, a good whack on top of the dashboard seems to cure it :D

Its very likely to be your kph -> mph speedo convertor. Had this problem before. The convertor is normally placed after the speed sensor on top of the gearbox (direclty under the throttle body).

Yes the wires would have been cut to add in the kph-mph converted so could be a dodgy or corroded connection

Thanks lads - will check.
In your experience, was it knackered or just a dodgy wire / connection?
Its not the wiring, these thing just seems to have a limited life. Im on my second replacement in 4 years.

OK, think I've fixed this now...
Somebody had (badly) wired in the mph converter and left wires bared... These were touching each other!
So all insulated and problem seems to have gone.
