When driving up to see the in-laws this weekend (obviously I wasn't in too much of a hurry :)) I managed to cover 309.7 miles in my E7 before filling up! Now, even though I was pootling along like an old git wearing a flat cap and driving gloves, I certainly didn't think I'd only use 41.22 litres of Shell's finest to cover that distance.

By my reckoning, at 4.54 litres to a gallon then I managed over 34mpg!! The journey was virtually all motorway and according to Autoroute 2002 it was 310.7 miles so my odometer was pretty much spot on.

Are the gear ratios significantly different on a 7 to give improved economy when cruising or was it just me driving like a homer?

300 miles on a tank is definitely do-able, provided you keep revs low and shift at 2000 rpm. :)
Tried it as well on my E6
