Guys, with the choice to go for an evo soon and use it for company car mileage, i think an investment in a radar detector would be worth while to help save my license (although i am a careful driver but can't see it being the case all the time in a car like this...plus having driven a diesel for a year!).

Whats the best on the market?

I've tried out the road angel but to be honest, found that its only useful for static camera's you've uploaded into its memory. Don't detectors exist that can pick up on police cars etc? I know they exist in america in the same way that they are able to listen in on police radio etc!

Any advise would be appreciated :)

i run 2 detectors in my car , a road angel, and a valentine 1 with concealed display.( advisable because the valentine is shaped for left hand drive cars), had a bel990 prior to that, and it was excellent as well, i think you get what you pay for

I run a Snooper S6-R Neo. It's got a radar & laser detector that's detachable from the main GPS system. This means that when they ban the use of laser & radar detectors I can still use the main unit with the GPS bits.

The Radar&Laser sensor comes with a long log lead that means that you can mount it in front of the radiator.

I've also got a snooper S5-R (Just a Radar&laser detector) which is more sensitive to radar. (Although this is in the Pug at the moment).

The only comment I have about the S6-R Neo is that the contrast is not all the great on the screen. However it's got some other functions (which I'm sure someone will tell me is standard on any GPS detectors :) ) like being able to set a speed alert, so when you accelerate it beeps when you reach the set speed. eg 80mph. This is actually really useful for warning you when you are speeding. :)

So do these detectors mentioned pick up on police cars etc, even if they are in a local road and not checking speeds? I want something that can help me avoid any risk of speeding.

Also, i will have a tom tom go by that point, can they be linked up in anyway?

the road angel comes with a laser extra for detecting the mobile units, personally i didnt like the unpredictability of it, i use the angel for its gps capabilities and the valentine for mobiles and police , remember although a camera van is sited on the verge, it doesnt log every cars speed , hence sometimes there is no warning ( dont think the units not working), the same with fixed cameras , the gps picks them all up but they are not necessary on, you get a warning before some of the fixed that are transmitting with the valentine , on others no sound as you approach or go through the lines. it means they are not switched on,

valentine is the make , reputed to be one of the best look at
www.valentine1.com
For info and spec , i think its an excellent detector, ps if you get one make sure its either a 1.7 with the last 3 numbers of he serial number above 650 ( i think . better double check on the website) or a 1.8 version , ( these have the KU band that is being used here )

This information may be useful to those of you if you use sat nav system.

I'm in the process of building a carputer (basically a PC for the car controlled from a touch screen monitor) which allows you to use the PC as your full media centre, Tuner, mobile office and satnav system.

If you use some nav systems such as Autoroute and I think TomTom (I think there are others also) you can add in additional data. The reason that I mention this is that there are web sites from which you download the data of all UK and most European speed cam, red light, specs and mobile locations.

As this all works with GPS it should remain legal for a while to come.

If anyone is interested I'll dig out the URLs to allow you to down load the data files?

Cheers
