QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TOP SPEED OF THE EVO 6/7

I have a question..I hope you can answer it!

If i'm right, a stock Evo6 has a top speed of 230km/h and the Evo 7 is electronically limited at 180km/h

I think that is kind of low for an extreme car like the Evo..
So I'm wondering if the top speed is altered on for example a Evo6 RS450 ? I can't seem to find top speed info on the evo anywhere! except for a couple of stock evo's at supercars.net

what top speed has the WRC car Makkinen drives?

and what is the highest possible top speed a street legal Evo can have ? (how much top speed can u get out of a 2litre engine?)

and why is the evo7 limited at 180km/t ?

Cheers

UnderTaker,

The top speed for the EVO 6 may be 230 km/hr as you stated, but this is probably the Makinen edition. I believe that most of the other EVOs are limited to 180km/hr meaning EVO4,5, and 6..not sure about the first three EVOs. Anyway, I think it is a Japanese restriction to have a max speed of 180km/hr. Just like how there is a max power of say 206KW...although this will be surpassed soon :)

You can simply remove the speed limiter to travel faster than 180km/hr. The Makinen WRC car has a slower top speed. This is due to its gear ratios and thus can not attain a higher speed. But in rally you rarely reach top speed anyway.

Not sure what the top speed for a 2L displacement engine is.

I read on http://www.myevo.com/evo.htm
that the evo6 has a top speed of 242km
and the evo7 has 254km

so I guess thats right..

however..what I want to know if that some of you have modded cars that have higher topspeed than that?
or if it's possible?
how much can you really cream out of a 2 litre engine?
G
Here in Spain, Evos go from 210 to 250 kmh depending in which gear box you choose.
I have read that this restriction only happens in Japan.
G
This not only comes down to a question of HP but also gear ratios...as has been mentioned, the WRC car doesn't have a very high top speed due to the ratios.

Hmm there were some people here a while back who were looking at getting a custom made 6sp gearbox to get better ratios - and higher top speed????

Sort of didn't answer your question at all...but felt as though I needed to say something :D

P.S The Evo 1-3's also had the same 180 cut out..... :(
G
Right, it's hot a question of HP !!

In 5th gear at 7000rpm you've got ~ up to 250Km/h
but the top speed is limited by the rev !!!
G
Undertaker,

in my opinion looking just at top speed figures on an evo is missing the point. An Evo is about going around corners and acceleration not top end. If you want top end then there are many cars that would beat an evo as it has a relatively high drag.

The official Mitsi Uk literature gives a 150mph top end. The 2.2l Jun conversion has been tested up to 9000rpm. This would give in excess of 180mph with GSR gearing, whether the car would do this I don't know, but as i say its not about top end.
G
Undertaker,

My E6 TME has frequently hit the rev limiter in 5th gear, indicating 164 mph.
There must be some error due to the instruments accuracy ofcourse.

The problem is that after 145 mph, my car (fully standard) accelerates real slow.

Alex.
G
If you do the maths hitting the limiter in top on a E6 GSR |EQU| 168mph and yes it can be done ;)

Engine capacity has absolutely nothing to do with theoretical top speed. It's power at the wheels, frontal area, co-efficient of drag and gearing that matter the most and, to a much lesser extent, weight (due to its effect on rolling resistance).

And 2 illustrate that point , MG's Leman car this year was pulling well over 200 mph down mulsanne , 2 ltr engine !

My VI GSR pulls the revlimiter in top , forget the rest of the dials , the revlimit is 7700rpm , so calc on the gearing gives about 168 MPH , can't argue with it the limiter is accurate , it has 2 b .

I estimate with a genuine 400 bhp and an Evo cud pull 185 mph , obviously with an increased rev limit.

there was a evo3 that came over from japan for the option speed trial, it was the garage SPL car 500ps it's a daily driver and got 300.7kph on the rev limiter!

168mph is that a stock evo6?
I'll be surprised if he answers.... It was 17 years ago.

What is top speed of evo6.
Anybody been on track with standard 6 , air strip?
I used my Evo 6 to regularly commute to Munich in the early 2000's, and so had it flat out many times on the Autobahns on the rev limiter. That was totally standard apart from a Ralliart ECU, running 1.5bar of boost, a HKS exhaust (decat back) and a cone filter. From calculating revs and wheel/tyre diameter, it worked out to be approx 165mph.

Come along to the Day on a Runway event and you'll get a good idea.
