may he rest in peace, a brave man, he has shown the world u can be ill and dying and old and still he comes out and meets his people [/QUOTE

eh yeah right moses, he has also shown the world that although he was so close to god, as old age set in he started slavering down his jumper, losing his senses and getting his arse wiped by a nurse with a jey cloth every day. surely god should have at least let a guy that has done so much good in the world and so much for him die with some dignity?

Come on, I know you speak your mind, but still, show some respect mate. Like him or not, he did a lot of good for the world, and he didn't hate anyone.

Not that I want to be part of any popularity contest or anything (standard disclaimer for Aidy ;) ) but the guy in his twilight years seemed very decent and patient even if he was racked with pain due to his ongoing illnesses. Probably one of the last true believers. Rest in peace.

Mebbie.. but I'm fairly sure that the countries in 'Africa' that are being devastated by Aids were not following the Popes advice regarding the use of condoms when they were breeding like rabbits (not as if you are going to find a Lloyds Pharmacy in the middle of a bloody desert now are you?).

Not really the point is it?

The following or preaching of any religion to the point where you are blindly sending people to their death devalues the religion in question.

Wouldn't the world be a better place...............

People's beliefs change the world in so many ways and his was just one of them. It does not make him any more evil than the next man and he tried to do the right thing in his own way which I respect for that; even though I do not agree with the institution that he represented.

edited to add:

My personal view on religion is that there is no place for it - it has been responsible for more wars, death and poverty than any other concept known to man.

Despite some of his policies on AIDS and contaception I think he made a very positive contribution to the World and he will be hard to replace.

Although not particularly religious myself anymore, I would rather my children take on christian beliefs than those that seem to be prevelant amongst the young in society today. I believe the pope did reach a lot of young people. Just look at the crowds on the news footage - just as many young as old.

He was also the first Pope for a long time to try and bring together the muslim and christian faiths in peace. Just look at the number of Cardinals who have actually studied and now specialise in Islam.
