Hi everyone...

I really really need some help and would appreciate any advice as I have exhausted all the avenues I can think of...

Ok so... I have an Evo 8Mr... My calipers were really badly worn so I took my car to a local garage that I use often (not evo specialist) where they agreed to remove my calipers and send them off to a specialist calliper rebuild company then once they got them back they put them back on for me. In the process they advised me if I wanted to do some upgrades then now would be a good time. So they fitted metal braided hoses (they sourced it) and they recommended I put uprated brake fluid dot 4 I think in the system to enhance brake performance.

Once I got the car back the brakes really are so much better...

But 2 weeks later some different problem started and I don't know if there is a link but it's just too much of a coincidence..
I was driving and my car randomly refused to go into 4th gear..
So I thought I did take it to the garage and the mechanic some how managed to get it to go into 4th again.. Which was a relief!

In the process I thought I did have the gearbox and transfer box oil changed so I did that - and no p metal pieces or anything were found.

Now even though 4th gear was sorted I was faced with a another problem...
If I am at red lights and I put into neutral and release the clutch soon as I press the clutch back in and want to engage first gear, it just won't do it unless I put it into 3rd let it move forward a bit then get it into 1st.. The other thing that will get it into 1st is if I pump the clutch a few times.. Reverse and 2nd is impossible too..
So after reading and asking many people I discovered that the clutch and brake system share the same reservoir and I know my local mechanic didn't change the clutch fluid with new fluid and possible in the process some air may have got into the clutch system. So I decided to take my car to another garage that knows evo's reasonable well to have the clutch bled with the new unrated fluid and to make sure no air was in the system. They also adjusted my clutch rod... But no luck...

Really need some help as I really don't know what's wrong... And I don't want to end up forking out big money such a new clutch and gearbox rebuild- for something that could be an easy fix.
My current clutch I have only done 10k miles to which I never do track days or launches only just some fun when joining a motorway at 5Am in the morning!!

It just all seem to have occurred close to when I got callipers done and seems all to coincidental that I'm now having gear problems..

Can anyone give me suggestions on what I could try?
Could it have been the process of upraised brake fluid being put in and clutch left with old oil? Is there a pattern in the way the brake callipers should be bled??
Ohhhh I don't know!! Please help!!

Thanks in advance..

well things that spring to mind are:

Try bleeding some fluid through the clutch slave cylinder, oil change may have introduced a little air

I had a slave cylinder fail, wasnt obvious but no matter how much fluid I bled, there was always minute air bubbles, made gear selection hard, and eventually the car would keep pulling with the clutch pressed

Clutch could be on its way out, evo clutches just dont often last long

Lastly being a 6 speed, 4th gear is the typical weak spot, could be a sign its on its way out

Clutch line has been bled already via the slave cylinder..
If my slave cylinder was gone- how would i know?? Any particular symptoms??

If two different oils have mixed with each other could it cause this problem??

Thinking about it, i dont think it is the cylinder, as that would be the same for all gears.

Cant see mixed oils causing the issue

The 4th gear is a the typical common failure on 6 speeds boxes, search on here should give you more info

There is adjustment on the clutch pedal that can gain a little clutch, again a search on here should give you info

Hopefully someone on here with experience of 6 speed boxes will give you info on signs its failing, if it is that

The reservoir is shared on 7/8/9 unlike the previous Evos as you mentioned , seeing that pumping the clutch pedal got you into gears it would point to air in system ...yet the next garage didnt find any ????
Could be clutch on way out , i had gear selection issues at start of 2016 after a night driving (playing )in the snow ....next morning i couldnt select gears !
Never cured it , only helped it a bit with oil change etc ....until clutch started to go in that summer .....
Had similar issue selecting gears after NEW clutch +flywheel +spare gearbox fitted before Christmas .....tried everything , new slave cclinder /new master cyclinder /bleed fluids couple of times /new gear cables.....it was the new clutch was the issue this time ......quality control not good on it
I digress , get it to an evo specialist !!

i have the same or similar issue..

see the link below

http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=529755

1st and 3rd use the same Synchro so if 3rd is playing up sounds like gearbox. my 3rd gear plays now and then.

I had my gearbox oil changed ( to see if that helped ) and there was maybe a little sign of wear in the gearbox but no joy so seems to point to the gearbox and my clutch is not dragging and the cold weather is not helping.

now i wondering what to do whether to get a

2nd hand 6 speed or
2nd hand 5 speed
or a reconditioned 5 speed gearbox.

answers on a post card!?

I have not.. but I believe this won't work as under driving gearbox is fine...

i have had 2 people look at this, both recommended an oil change... and believe it's a gearbox problem..

If the reservoirs are shared - Could air in the braking lines upset the clutch system ? Is it worth me bleeding the brakes again seeing that I had new calipers put in?

I have a 6 speed which was very notchy and I needed to put it in to 2nd then put it in to 1st. Problem was 90% resolved and now 1st gear is smooth as butter (I actually cant remember last time I had to put it in to 2nd gear to engage 1st) with this:

For me this was a cheap mod over a gearbox investigation. But what your experiencing may be different to me..but in some way sounds similar...
