I've spoken to DVLA about putting my personal number plate on retention as I'm selling the car and will then go and look for a new car she told me that I would need to go to a local DVLA office with certain documents to get the retention certificate.

I told her that the guy may buy the car there and then so would drive off with it on there and she told me that they advise this not to be done as I could lose the number plate as the local office may want to inspect the vehicle!

Whats the likelyhood of this and has anyone else had this problem and what shoudl I do?

I suppose the easiest solution would be to get it on retention before the sale goes through but I work during the week so it would be difficult to do between now and Saturday!

Help!!!!

If you can't transfer the plate before sale then make sure you get an agreement with the buyer that you will transfer the plate after the sale. Make sure they are aware of the hassles etc this may entail. Probably best to get it in writing/put it on the receipt.

In total it takes 4-6 weeks to get the plate put on retention.

This is what I did:

Made a request to DVLA to put plate on retention

Waited one week.

Was told that original plate was now available to put on car (btw, this can happen same day). However, private plate was still being processed.

Sold Car but did not send off V5 and explained to buyer (ollieb7) the situation with the plates. Put 'Original Plates' back on car (at this point two reg numbers were registered to car 'the overlap period'). Buyer drove off with car.

Waited 3 weeks.

Updated V5 came in with new Reg Number - however, private plate still assigned to car (i confirmed this by calling DVLA).

Waited approx 5-6 days.

DVLA retention certificate came through. Filled in V5, back dated when car was originally sold and sent to DVLA.

We made a verbal agreement about the car being in hands of the new buyer if he racked up any points. Though if you think the buyer may be dodgy, make it a written one. :)

So explain how you get a full V5, the retention certificate, the original plate put back on the car the same day?

You can put private plates on the car the same day with a temporary form until the true V5 hits on your doormat but I don't know of anyone else bar you apparently who can get the original plates put back on the car the same day. Anyone else?

i sold my car but kept the log book so i could sort the reg onto retention and then send log book off for the new owner.

waited about 6 weeks, then the new owner forwarded the retention cert to me because it was sent to him and also now in his name. :(

this all came about because i sold the vehicle first.

also 2 people in the queue before me had to have thier vehicle inspected.

Got it sorted yesterday.

Went to Chelmsford DVLA and got a new registration number issued and put my private plate onto retention.

They kept the log book and when I receive the new one in 2-4wks time it will have the new registration on it - all I then do is send it back off to DVLA with the new owners details - he won't even have to sign it.

Also in time I'll get my retention certificate through the post so when I find a car I want I can just get it transferred over.

30mins work for DVLA at £105  they must be raking it in!!

Anyway all I need now is for Neil off here to buy it tomorrow :D then I'll be on the market for a modded 7 :coolsm:
