First the story.
I sold off my Evo 6 and after buying my 'grale got £10k change. I get more fun out of the 'grale cos I'm not too bothered about trashing a "cheaper" motor so that got me thinking...
This got me wondering...what performance motors you could get nowadays for less than £1k, were upwards of 150bhp (well power to weight more important) and preferably RWD or 4WD although decent FWD handlers maybe allowed ;)
Not strict guidelines...for example decent handling cars with less power can get through...Pug 205 Gti springs to mind.

I bet there are some unusual motors out there but to start the ball rolling:

BMW E30 318iS/325iS
Nissan 200sx (just about getting into this price bracket now?)
Mazda 323 4x4 turbo

Keep the ball rolling, some experiences of them would be good to hear too.

Oh yeah the old Monza/Manta, forgot them, loads turned into rally cars...sort of a cheaper version of the Mk1/2 Escort.

Almost bought a Carlton 3000GSi a while back but it drove like a huge barge and too many warning lights came on the dash for my liking! Guess it was a bit tired but I bet a sorted one would be great fun.

Drzuess, you are right about stripping cars down and selling bits on...can almost pay for the mods to turn them into track cars.
After years of disliking BMW's simply because of the brush they get tarred with I went out and bought an E30 to turn into a track car. I always liked the E30 styling and their handling is a legend but an M3 was out of the price bracket so went for a 325iSE - RWD, 170bhp, MTec suspension, bloody excellent motor in standard form!...stripped out all the MTec kit and made a few hundred on that and got all the kit to turn it into a BMW Kumho challenge car...kit plus car cost about £3.5k, would have been a 190bhp 1050kg N/A RWD stunner though.

Seems this is almost turning into a "For Sale" thread, wasn't my intention but I will join in ;). If anyone wants a project BMW that would make a great Drift/Track/Race car it's up for sale, I bought the 'grale instead, simply was an offer I couldn't refuse.
I'll stick the details on here later.

Leonard you are tempting me with that Golf...looks a bargain!!

i was gonna say monte turbo as i had alot of fun with mine before it died (200hp at the wheels!), however most have died due to rust. hence what about rover 200 turbo. 200 hp as standard. strip it out and it would be a good laugh. or even some of the non turbo ones were 150hp. i would think these go for peanuts these days. brakes/handling is respectable.

mk2 cav with the 130hp engine, or get one that someone has dropped a twin cam in. or nova/ashtray.

pug 205 1.9 do go for no money these days.

to be honest anything stripped out is a laugh. at the first trackday i went to there were 2 lads in a stripped out 1.4 nova having a massive laugh coz it was worth bugg3r all.

Had our eye on a red one of those, would probably been the second choise, insurance on the Audi only costin £15.00 admin charge on top of the £276.00 for the Monza.

Yeah the 205 GTi, nearly bought a track prepared one off someone on here...excellent motor, great handling, all that is said about them is true. There is a vast difference between a decent one and a shed though as I have test driven both. Thinking of getting one as a daily runner. Need to get rid of my BMW first really...too many cars!! Still 3 cars ain't bad, had 5 cars this time last year!

As for insurance...
2000 Evo 6 (group 20)...£900+

1989 16v Integrale (group 18), loads of mods (Martini paintwork, stripped interior, MOMO buckets, Sparco roll cage, ATL fuel cell, Speedline Magnesium alloys, Tar-ox 6 pots etc. etc.)...£360!!!

Cheap as chips, can't beat classics ;)

Col, I think that would be mine you test drove about 3 years back :) & good to see you make a reappearance BTW mate. Pity you never bought it, in the end it was wasted on some woman who bought it to potter round in. Still had the Yoko cut slicks on when I sold it, hope she survived the first rainy day :D

My votes still with the 205 if you can get a decent one, sadly becoming more of a rarity as time goes by. TBH a grand will get you one of the better ones these days so its worth paying a bit over the odds to avoid big repair & maintenance bills.

Cheers,
Steve.
