I can't believe it. I pulls up to my local Shell garage the other night to fill up with precious Optimax only to be faced with a note saying that the garage was changing to BP overnight

What do I do?

Its 8 mile of **** driving to the nearest Shell garage now and 500m to the Bp

What would you do boys, do I stick to the Optimax and forgo that part of my life just to go and get it or do i go BP which is dearer and has lower RON?

HEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!!

I ran my 4 on both optimax and ultimate and i couldnt tell the difference performancewise but it did seem to run a shade cooler with the ultimate.

I have put both in my RS and i cant say theres a difference there either so i reckon its downto you as to whether or not you want to do a round trip of 16 miles (and remember thats a gallon) to fill up :D

Go for the Ultimate. You might be surprised....... Although, as always, I'd recommend Esso SUL above them both :D:D

I've used BP Ultimate for 20 months, no probs at all. It's been on 2 rolling roads, no det, running 1.5bar as well. Hell, I even used Ultimate in my old Jap WRX for a year, and the chocolate pistons survived the ordeal perfectly intact. ;)

Don;t use BP ulitmate , well , if you do use Det. Cans ;)
That's a worrying statement. I have to admit, I find BP better than Optimax. Is this said through experience then ?

Of course, if true, it also means I can go to tuner X after filling with Optimax, fill up with BP at some point afterwards, get Det 'left right and centre' and then come on here and slag that tuner off noend ;)

Yes , it's through experiance , i know of a car being mapped on a tank of BP Ulitmate which had to have nearly half the ignition taken out of the mapp for it to be safe . Then , all the BPU was used , a full tank of Optimax was bought , all the ignition was able to be loaded back into the mapp with out a crack of Det.

The car was an 8MR 320 . The tuner was more than qualified .

It might have been a rouge tank of fuel , supplied by that garage , and yes , i'm 100% sure it was ultimate NOT normal unleaded as i've seen the reciept too ;) :D

I'm glad to hear people's cars are fine running the BPU , it's good to know yours have been / are fine - but tbh they will be , the car was either mapped to that fuel and their fore the ignition will have been mapped in safely . Or if it's a Ralliart ECU (or simmilar) then that's got the capability of running many different stages of tune and fuels available - so it will be fine.

Tom,
The key point in your statement is that the car was obviously mapped for the particular fuel and so there will be a difference due to the change in RON however, if the car isn't mapped for it then provided it doesn't det on 97RON (which is highly unlikely) there will be no problems running any super unleaded.
