No boost and oil in exhaust

Hi peeps, wondered if you can help with my little problem.

It' not on my Evo but my 2.5td Pajero.

While driving it yesterday I was giving it a bit of stick to get up a hill and I got a sudden woosh sound (like when air brakes go off) from under the bonnet.
It then struggled to the top of the hill and sounded like an old transit van. Really rattling and the turbo didn't seem to be coming in at all.

At first I thought it was one of the turbo hoses but they are all intact, checked the turbo for play and that seems fine too.
It wasn't until I revved it hard that I noticed it spitting oil and black smoke out of the exhaust.

Does this sound like the turbo has shot it? I just think it's strange that it now rattles so much and I'm kind of thinking pistons.

Any advice appreciated
