Opened a Word document, made some changes and then clicked the red x like normal, and it just shut down without asking me if I wanted to save the doc.

Opened it again, changes were not saved.

Made changes again and then tried a "save as" - this caused the following error to show in a pop up

[Microsoft Word]_SaveDoc ERROR: 4172: Path not found

This was consistent so I couldn't save ANY changes.

Then removed the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack I installed this morning, and now I don't get the error any more but if I close Word with the red X it still doesn't ask me if I want to save the changes..

XP on a Compaq Presario laptop running Word 2000.

Checked Google AND Microsoft and didn't find this error anywhere....

Thanks,

Steve

First thing I'd do with word 2000 is remove the data key from the registry.

open regedit, navigate to this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Data

(maybe 9.0 instead of 10.0)
Export that key and then delete the Data folder.
Open word and see what happens then.

Cheers chocky,

I'll give it a try a bit later on.

Chocky,

it was in 9.0 - did that but still doesn't think anything's changed when I hit the red x.
Save and save as work OK as mentioned before.

At least now I'm not getting the 4172 path not found error.

Just did a test with Excel, by making a change and then shutting the product down, and it DID ask me if I wanted to save the changes.

So it looks like the problem is specific to Word. Maybe there is an option to control this but I didn't think so.
