Madmac Motorsport's Twincharged Evo 5

During the winter build of the old Evo 5 hillclimb slag I decided to look at ways of reducing the turbo lag which was becoming an issue and costing precious hundredths of seconds on the hills last year. It never lacked top end power but the lag really started to get to me and i knew i could make it quicker point to point by reducing the lag - but keeping top end power.
I looked at many possible ways to do this but in the end settled for adding a supercharger to run in conjunction with the turbo.

Designed and built by myself with input from friends and members on MLR, most parts have been fabricated in my garage from whatever was lying around, the end result has been worth the blood, Sweat and tears I've put into this.

We've had her on the dyno at Wallace Performance in Aberdeen and had surprisingly few teething problems considering the unknowns and the huge amount of bespoke parts that needed to be designed, fabricated and made. Initial mapping is done now and the whole package is showing some serious potential! We've decided to keep the system at it's minimum until i do reliability tests and learn how to drive it properly

I've also designed and built a tubular front subframe and arms (total 9Kg:D) to reduce front weight and while i was at it, it seemed rude not to play with the suspension geometry!

I want to thank a few people for their input and help:

Russ and the guys at Wallace Performance who did the mapping and supplied parts/tea/banter etc. Top guys and never ones to shy from a challenge! Can't thank you enough:smthumbup:D. http://www.wallaceperformance.co.uk/

My mate Steve Marr who is the main technical guru, and who i regularly bugged to ask lots of questions on a daily basis:smthumbup.

My mate Graeme Wight Jnr for his help with the front subframe and major suspension geometry changes, Exhaust and general setting up

Alan Young Engineering Ltd for the quality machined bespoke pulleys and parts, Spot-on parts and great prices http://www.timingbeltpulleys.co.uk/pages/home.php

And everyone else who suffered because of my constant lust for knowledge during the build:smthumbup:D

As yet i've to do some miles and get her setup for the start of the 2010 Scottish Sprint & Hillclimb Championship, so for the moment i'm being realistic about expectations & screwing the nut until i check everything over and get used to driving it. Hoping to do some track testing soon though. I've had her out for a short drive and so far the whole package is working impressively. Instant delivery at anything above 2500rpm with absolutely awesome accelleration in every gear! This is on it's lowest boost setting too....

Over the next few months The guys at Wallace Performance & I are going to refine some of the setup and see what she's really capable of! We know we can find a lot more power & torque with some simple changes.

Meantime i'm happy with the initial results and looking forward to Doune Hillclimb in 2 weeks:D:D Should be fun!

Keep watching....;)

You doing both days Madmac? Missed you last time and maybe try to get up on Sunday:smthumbup!

This is a British Championship event so it's a 2-day meeting. Practice Saturday and timed runs with the top-12 runoff on Sunday. Forecast looks good :smthumbup
The Avon slicks in the wet will still give more grip than any treaded tyre i could buy - except cut Avons ;)
Are you absolutely sure about that? You could easily get hold of something like a used set of Michelin wets for under £200. At least it might be worth having a go with something like that:)

I've looked at this before and all the Michelin compounds are harder than the Avons. Problem with hillclimbs is tyres don't get up to temperature but on a circuit they will heat up after a few laps so although the Michelins will be good in the wet, they need to be up to temp and that won't happen on a sub 1-mile run. The Avons are soft enough to build heat quickly which is why i use the same Avon compound as the dry but cut my own pattern in them. For the few times i'd need tread it doesn't seem worth cutting a set of £1500 tyres. I've run with no tread in the wet many times and have never felt the car aquaplane and the grip from the slicks is still very good. If there's doubt i'll forfeit a run as I usually have nothing to prove by going out in the 'very' wet anyway.
my Michelin wets feel softer than the Avons to the touch. they are like chewing gum.

only better than Avons through standing water though. there's no need for a full wet with no standing water IMO, and I've only seen a substantial amount of standing water once in my time, and that was just in practice.
My understanding is that the Michelin wet is a treaded version of their S5 (supersoft compound). And as Kenny suggests, they feel very sticky even when "cold". For what is would cost to get hold of a set of 27/65/18 wets (from Protyre, as used by the Ginettas in BTCC support races) I would have thought it was at least worth a try:)

Donald; what size tyres do/can you run?

I'm thinking of ex rallycross cut Avon (Cooper) slicks ;)

G
What size are they running grants .
And where can they be found .

Avon ACDB11 225/650-17 or 18 spec here. Softish compound so not suitable for track days

They occasionally crop on s/h race parts web sites, or I could probably find some local to me ;)

I have 10" x 18 rims and use 250/640/18 avons. If you can find anything soft and cheap I'll certainly try a set

Just back from doune. Spent the weekend logging and setting up launch control. Had a misfire plague the car all weekend which we think is a coil issue. I got within 0.6s of the record and a modprod /class win despite the misfire. I'll update with a report and vids later when I get time

Here's the Doune video of T2 with a normal launch and 45.69s. I needed the data from this run to help setup the launch control. All the other launches were with the LC working but still being setup. The data gained from Doune will be valuable in helping to setup the system now. We haven't looked at the cause of the misfire yet but suspect a coil failing as it got worse as the weekend progressed. Shame because the conditions at the weekend were great for breaking records. Jos Goodyear lowered his class record by 2.99s in the GWR Raptor and set a new outright track record of 35.05s only to lose it to Scott Moran who set a staggering 34.76s time which is almost a second lower than at the start of the weekend

Yea she's handling great now. I was getting quicker over the weekend and getting confident in the handling so it's a shame the misfire slowed me down.

The dash reflection only affects the camera and not the drive ;)
Nice one Donald car handles well. Hope you get the misfire sorted.

Jon.
Back to just being 'Madmac' again ;)

Products will still be made and developed but not advertised or sold via MLR any more.

Much work has been done on Tiddles since Doune. I still have to get her out for some testing before the Alford Sprint this Sunday so i'll do an update nearer the weekend ;)

So are you doing Harewood?
Hope to go to Harewood at some point this year but as yet not 100% sure. With such a poor budget I never know if I'll be able to afford these extra jaunts down south. I intend to do the final Loton Park BHC event this year so I can't go spending lots on too many other events.

Have just had some additional expense on Tiddles & getting her MOT'd and ready for Kames next weekend
Update

Misfire sorted, car back together and running well :)

The Alford Sprint tomorrow but the forecast looks wet all day :wallbang:

Always a good spectator event, if you're in the area come over and say hi
