Madmac Motorsport's Twincharged Evo 5

During the winter build of the old Evo 5 hillclimb slag I decided to look at ways of reducing the turbo lag which was becoming an issue and costing precious hundredths of seconds on the hills last year. It never lacked top end power but the lag really started to get to me and i knew i could make it quicker point to point by reducing the lag - but keeping top end power.
I looked at many possible ways to do this but in the end settled for adding a supercharger to run in conjunction with the turbo.

Designed and built by myself with input from friends and members on MLR, most parts have been fabricated in my garage from whatever was lying around, the end result has been worth the blood, Sweat and tears I've put into this.

We've had her on the dyno at Wallace Performance in Aberdeen and had surprisingly few teething problems considering the unknowns and the huge amount of bespoke parts that needed to be designed, fabricated and made. Initial mapping is done now and the whole package is showing some serious potential! We've decided to keep the system at it's minimum until i do reliability tests and learn how to drive it properly

I've also designed and built a tubular front subframe and arms (total 9Kg:D) to reduce front weight and while i was at it, it seemed rude not to play with the suspension geometry!

I want to thank a few people for their input and help:

Russ and the guys at Wallace Performance who did the mapping and supplied parts/tea/banter etc. Top guys and never ones to shy from a challenge! Can't thank you enough:smthumbup:D. http://www.wallaceperformance.co.uk/

My mate Steve Marr who is the main technical guru, and who i regularly bugged to ask lots of questions on a daily basis:smthumbup.

My mate Graeme Wight Jnr for his help with the front subframe and major suspension geometry changes, Exhaust and general setting up

Alan Young Engineering Ltd for the quality machined bespoke pulleys and parts, Spot-on parts and great prices http://www.timingbeltpulleys.co.uk/pages/home.php

And everyone else who suffered because of my constant lust for knowledge during the build:smthumbup:D

As yet i've to do some miles and get her setup for the start of the 2010 Scottish Sprint & Hillclimb Championship, so for the moment i'm being realistic about expectations & screwing the nut until i check everything over and get used to driving it. Hoping to do some track testing soon though. I've had her out for a short drive and so far the whole package is working impressively. Instant delivery at anything above 2500rpm with absolutely awesome accelleration in every gear! This is on it's lowest boost setting too....

Over the next few months The guys at Wallace Performance & I are going to refine some of the setup and see what she's really capable of! We know we can find a lot more power & torque with some simple changes.

Meantime i'm happy with the initial results and looking forward to Doune Hillclimb in 2 weeks:D:D Should be fun!

Keep watching....;)

New Year Update

Work on tiddles is progressing well.

I don't use the underbonnet intercooler now so I've made a new bonnet since the other one has a big square hole in it.

Rather than make a new dash I laid up some carbon onto glass and used the shiny carbon to cover all the holes from the old gauges and made a new binnacle which is bonded into the dash. Total weight shown on the photo ;). I had sold my carbon bonnet vents as the moulds were beyond use so I've made a new mould and a replacement pair of vents.

The bespoke wiring loom is mostly laid up - waiting for some screened cable to arrive then i can get started on terminating everything and turning it into a loom.

Most of the mechanical and pipework, sensors etc are installed now too.

While the dash is out i took the opportunity to replace the steering column bracket which I've never been happy with. A friend along the road cnc'd me steel plates to my pattern. Another job ticked off the list :)

Beast love this project, remind me whats the curled up copper tubing near timing belt area?

That's the pipe from manifold to the pressure sensor. I log the backpressure. The coil takes up engine movement and it's then heat-sinked to the inner wing to remove any heat from the manifold before it reaches the sensor ;)

Cool inovative ideas i suppose if you didnt think like that you would never have this result!
Definitely have to think outside the norm at times ;)

Amazing work, might have to come and see this in action.:smthumbup
Sorry if I've missed it but what ECU are you running now? MoTeC M150?
Yes, M150 ecu
Cool. Looking forwards to seeing how you do the loom.

Dash looks awesome too!
Going to have to read this from the start. Very cool ;)
Obligatory. Will you be running with motorsports ALS ?
Yes, M150 ecu
Talking to the men from motec today at the autosport show i asked about projects like yours. They explained that it would require a custom code firmware or something like that and some expensive non standard licences. What will the new ecu set you back by with all that included? They said Norris already has this setup running so will you run his firmware? What are the costs for firmware like this as motec could not answer this question.

This side of the work is in someone else's hands as i dont know the ins and outs of the firmware. I won't be using any of simons firmware, its being done bespoke for my setup.

Yea, its what the supercharger is for ;)

The 'dry' build is now finished, everything has been in place so the engine bay has been stripped to tidy it up properly with a 2-pack satin black while i'm waiting for the loom to come back. There were a few holes made over the years for various developments which have been welded up.

Now to build it back up again. Photos as I go ;)

Looks great Donald. Aren't you going to chop the front U bend and cross bar off to make it lighter and easier to fit the engine? I believe it's allowed in mod prod.

That's the plan ;)
