Man, I have had my evo for about 4 months now.. Its 2 years old and now done 10,000 miles.. Great at first, then I take it in for a check and it needs a new oxygen sensor there goes £300 straight away.. 2 services l8er, there goes around £260 quid, now its got another problem.. Starting a couple of weeks ago, when pulling out of my drive (slight incline with bump) i heard a nocking noise coming from what i thought was the back left wheel arch..I thought it was the exhaust at first, slight lose so thought nuthin of it really.. Noise keeps gettin louder a week or 2 later, now the noise seems to be coming from the front left wheel, and mainly happens when i am turning right (round roundabouts makes the most noise) The noise it can make is like a knocking exhaust type noise, with greeking sounds in it (very loud crink, crunch, greek).. weird, so i got it down to my local garage, they could hear this noise, so took it on the ramps, they had it all day, took of the front suspensoin etc.. No fault they could find, noise still there! :( Ok so i booked it in again, read on this forumn about hh6 problem u know the post about clunking on full right lock, then the solution, the symtoms etc.. All seemed to match my problem, so i printed all the infomation out, and handed it to the engineer, 2 days later, still in the garage.. Checked out all the stuff hh6 had to say about the noise on turning right about the 2 bolts etc.. My car was fine, they STILL CANT FIND THE PROBLEM???? Anyways, sorry for my rambling on, but this is ####ing me off now, can anyone please help with any suggestions, bearing in mind i am not very technical when it comes to cars.. thanks fir listening!

FRONT LEFT SUSPENSOIN-- and amp;gt; position of noise!

-Noise seems to happen most when turning right.
-happens more when turning right over bumps..
-Seems to happen more when going slower rather than faster..
-only made the noise when turning right to begin with.
-Now makes the noise but less on straights when going over bumps.
-When pulling in to petrol stations etc. on full right lock, sometimes when it makes the creeking noise u can feel it.

When did you have the Ayc fluid changed last?
I had a similar effect of right lock and slower speeds ,and all needed doing was the fluid change and correctly bled ,went away and never seen again.

The AYC got changed over on the 9000 mile service and the car has done around 10,000 now, If it was the ayc would'nt the noise come from the back and not the front? Anyways, mose suggestions plz, as any will help narrow down the fault.. :)

Could it be a ball joint? Had a very similar sounding problem with a previous Mitsi car that turned out to be a ball joint.

Not a power sterring problem... More like transmission/suspensoin? Beats me, i dont know at all... And the Engineers at the garage are a bit ??? as well!!

Ask them if they have checked it for the ball joint, sounds v much like it to me, (not that I am technical in any way shape or form!!!!)

Good luck.

sorry dj, couldn't resist it :)

My power steering pump does make alot of noise on my TME which has only done 3500 miles. But i guess you know the noise that it makes and it isn't that. Is it possible to get air in the power steering system?

I do wonder about the AYC. I know you said the noise seems to come from the front, but sometimes its difficult to tell. When i was at ralliart they said they got alot of cars in where the AYC had been improperly bled. Give them a ring and ask to speak to service manager. i've always found them very helpful.

Nice one! :) But these guys are Ralli art specialists (so they say) Its a mitsu garage! They now seem to think all it can be is the frontleft shock absorber, as they HAVE tried everything else, stript the car down etc.. So, i will have to see! :/

I had an email from someone in New Zealand when I was trying to find out details about my LSD fault and he suggested another possible solution. He described a problem very similar to yours where the garage stripped down and replaced everything on the front suspension (including 2 new shocks, driveshafts, wheel bearings and even a new steering rack!) over a period of 6 months but the problem was still there. Anyway to cut a long story short they tried one day to replace the suspension top mount with one from another car they were stripping down for rally preparation and it cured the problem.
I think someone else on here also had a problem with the top mounts and after a couple of replacements they took out the latest new one themself and saw that they were not adequately greased. A quick grease and it was fine.
Only a suggestion but it might be worth a look. This was on an E5 by the way. I have forwarded you the email.

I hope this helps.

I had a problem like this when I had my escort cossie. Its was a metal plate that had cracked at the top of the strut. It made all of the same noises that you describe and you could feel it when you was turning in at low speeds. I had it replaced and it was fine after that.

My E5 had a problem like this. Slight knoking/rumbling at slow (less 10 mph) when braking to a halt and manouvering on lock. it made the worst noise, sounding v loose when driven over an uneven grass field. At first inspection no cause was found, then the problem was diagnosed as worn front anti-role bar bushes at 26k miles. Apparently they do not have along life and upgrade to more robust competition grade lasts longer. -worth a look?

DJ,

my local (yeovil) is also a Ralliart specialist. However i'm not sure i'd trust 'em too far. People like Ralliart in dudley really are specialist. They deal with these motors every day. They don't deal in the run of the mill Mitsi's. Their workshops are pristine. Give 'em a call. I would if I had a problem like this.

Good luck mate.

Knocking sounds so hard to find and really p**s you off. Sent my car back to Ralliart and they managed to find the source.

It was a bent suspension strut. Not knackered, but had a slight bend in it. As I have had no accidents and have not hit a kerb (yet) it has been put down to a faulty original part. I would recommend taking your car to Dudley. If you cant get them to check the struts. Would never have thought of it myself. I thought it was the exhaust!

-Djack-

Had the same problem with my E4 RS. Solution? Changed all the tranny fluids. Seemed that the previous shop did not use LSD / hypoid oil on my transfer case and rear diff (with mech LSD) so noise was loud, especially in tight turns.

Try this one if you haven't yet and try changing the AYC fluid again. :) Goodluck!

Thanks for all your replies, I still have not found the problem.. They say its ok to drive it though.. Noise is still there. Its going in sometime this week for a new shock-absorber thingy :). My car btw has got HKS springs on it I forgot to mention, but I domnt see how this could have broken the shock.. Anyways, if the noise is still there after they put this new shcok on, i will take it ti dudly is it? How far away is this garage from Liverpool? Thanks again lads/girls.. :)
