Hello all, from the title u probable guessed that im not a lancer owner but ive wanted one for the last couple of years. I currently got a corrado G60 which is tuned to around 185 bhp and 199 lbs of torque, i need more, alot more!!

Well, i thinking of spanking around 10k on a car, at the moment im thinking about either an M3 or an impreza (sorry) But ive always wanted a lancer, its got to be an evo4/5 but there no way u get a 5 for less than 15 is there????

What i would like to know is
1 their reliability
2 common problems
3 typical runnin costs
4 r parts easily available
5 insurance 24 with 4 ncb

I m not on mega money so i need to know is it worth me gambling and getting an evo but i would be in trouble if somthing big went wrong or buy a cheaper impreza and be disapointed that its not a lancer, it will be cheaper to buy but still something big might go (like all turbo cars) and i'll be in trouble, alternativley get a boring M3 which is mega fast but looks dull, very reliable though!! cousin had one for 2 years and only changed a light bulb!!!

need some advice
thanx in advance

GET AN EVO everytime.... No seriously if u can afford a 5 get 1 u will not regret it. At your age u WILL b the talk of the town, you'll also get noticed like u never thought. The running cost can b high, eg. Insurance, petrol(crap mpg) but the buzz u get from been in 1 makes up 4 it. I have had my 6 for 3-4 weeks now and if i live 2b a 100 i wont drive a more powerful car and mines a bog standard GSR. If yr like me you will have the EVO smile on yr face everytime u get in it..... Just do it!!!!

I once read a quote in Performance Car (I think) refering to the Evo6
something like.........

The answer to eternal happiness is to spend the rest of your days with an incredibly attractive member of the opposit sex on your arm

or,

Buy a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6, everyone will want to be your friend etc, etc, etc.

The same can be said for the 5.

GO FOR THE 5 !!!!!

If you can afford an evo 4/5 get one! I have spend ages looking for a car after I smashed up my FTO, tested an afew scooby sti and p1, Skyline gts and GTR, as well as tested a few EVO, but at the end of the day I went for the EVO due to the fact its lots of fun and it meets my need as a family car. scooby yes the same but powerwise on the sti is not as good as evo also flying round bends. Evo 5 is more tunable than the evo 4, but I went for 4 instead because its cheaper and It leaves me a few extra bit of money for tuning. I have got my 4 for 6 months now, with the money I got left over I tune the car to around 350bhp which is more than enough for road use. but if you do want to go even more extream then the 5 is a better for tuning, but more expensive to buy compared to an 4. if you can afford 15k for an five you can look at the import evo 6 for around 16k I have seen a few for sale a while ago for that price. the choice is yours mate.

mozza go for it ,i've had a 5 for 15 months now and i may be lucky but nothing has ever gone wrong with it. i always have it serviced when it needs one and thats no more expensive than any other top marque.parts are expensive but ask on the forum and there are so many people in the know that you should be able to get good prices and sound advice.Insurance shop around, once again lots of advice on this web site but most insurance companys will tell you it needs a cat one alarm and imobiliser and also some form of tracker.also cars need to run on super unleaded or shell optimax,i currently get about 20 miles to a gallon and lancers only have 48 liter tanks.as for mods just do them when you can afford to do them the cars are quick in standard form.as for buying one always do your homework ask the right questions need any advice your in the right place.good luck hope this helps

You will get a tidy Evo 3 for 10k now.
Far better than the M3 or scoob, and not much different to a 4. In fact it has almost the same BHP but is lighter. And it has no fancy electronic diffs to help you/go wrong expensively. All Evo's handle better than their scooby counteparts.
And you'll get in your face looks, proper pedigree, rallying heritage and a rare car. (And they feature the same comforts as the 4/5's - climate control, elecy windows etc - if that is of concern)

Mozza,
First thing to do would be to get some sample insurance quotes on an Evo 3,4 and 5 to see which one falls into your price bracket with your age.
As for running costs, you get about 20 mpg if you drive reasonably sensibly so that means about £30 of fuel will get you about 200 miles. Servicing on the 4,5 and 6 is every 4,500 miles and you normally expect about £200-300 per service (depoending on where you go)
Common problems are warped brakes (but this is mainly on the Evo 6 I believe) overboosting and fuel cuts due to sticking or rusted wastegate actuators and worn clutches from too many standing starts. Apart from that they are very reliable and parts are relatively easy to get hold of.

Hope this helps

Thanx for ur comments lads/lasses etc....., well one things for sure is its got to be a evo4, the 3 really doenst do it that much for me, the 4 looks awesome, menacing and slightley quicker.

how much does ur evo cost u a month to run? i dont do mega miles probably less than 10k a year (hard red line mad miles), fuel consumptions not that important as my corrado gets low 20s on a good day!!! so im used to shitty mpg.

Whats the worst thing to go wrong on the evo and how much to fix it, turbo? gear box or that yaw diff????... obviously the engine is a big £££ when it goes but i dont even wanna think about engines going!!!!

how much do evo 4's go for, ive seen a couple at 12k.. where can i get one from a dealer??? i live near n london.

I really wanted an evo for 2 years and now ive finished uni and got a resonable job i got to get one or somthing crazy fast!!!

thanx in advance

get your self a evo you will not regret it , i bought mine nearly a year ago (evo 6 gsr) when i was 21 (now 22) and the look on peoples faces when you drive by or get in to it and drive off from a garage or car park is well worth the money , as for driving its the fastest thing i have ever driven and likely to be as nothing else for the same price can offer as much as an evo

You'll be doing well to get a 4 for 10k! Usual price is between 11 and 13k for a mint one. I know that someone from here part xed a 4 to Motorworld Mitsubishi (Oxford) a couple of weeks back. Nice one too! Not sure of price, or if they are selling it themselves, or passed it on! Worth a phone call, though.

Not many main dealers or specialist dealers (with the exception of Ralliart) seem to sell 4's. Best place to look is on the for sale board on here (realistic prices generally, better than average cars as enthusiast owned), or Auto trader/ top marques.

Engines are pretty bullet proof (unless stupidly modded). Gearboxes seem to be the same. If going for a GSR 4 (or 5), check that it has had the ayc re-call done if affected (lots of 4's and 5's were). Clutches don't tend to last too long (approx £300), brakes are fairly cheap on the 4 (not Brembo's as with newer ones).

20mpg average, maybe 15-18 if driven properly. SUL only (or preferably Opimax 98 ron), s 3p a litre more money. Servicing is every 4500 miles, and really needs to done at this!!

Go for it (but check insurance, it can be horrendous if you're young)! Evo-ness will take hold and never let you go! Anything else would be a compromise, and life ain't about compromises!:)

Good luck, it WILL be fun!
