Pouring over my WSM (I got them upon the advice of HH6, and I think everyone who has an Evo should get one), I was trying to find a cause for the noise which I experience past 4K RPM's, which I thought was the engine or turbo. Lo and Behold! I saw that the transfer case must use Hypoid Gear Oil. I'm using a regular 85W/140 gear oil (non-LSD) on my E4 RS, and could this be the cause of the noise? Also, is Hypoid oil similar to LSD oil?

Sorry for my somewhat dumb questions, as I do not know much yet. http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/happy1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >

Will the usual suspects, HH6 and Evoboy etc step forward and comment/explain? [img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/happy1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >

Many thanks guys! |EQU|)

Re:Hypoid Gear Oil:

Botchi,

Hypoid gear oil is used for gear teeth which are Hypoid in form , eg: crown wheel and pinion in differentials , these tooth forms develop very high tooth contact pressures and require this special oil.

LSD oil is the same but has additives for the clutch pack used in an LSD , this oil shud only be used for that application.

Generally the grade and type of gear oil must be correct for the gearbox/diff/trans case etc.....very important.

Now, could this cause a loud booming noise when wrong oil is poured in the gearbox and transfer case? [img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/sad1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >
