The prognosis of my gearbox is 'shagged'. Its munched the crown wheel, pinnion, the lot. The box is beyond repair. So I need another one...

Anyone now of sources for second hand boxes ?
I've already had a (shocking) price for a new box.
Its going to cost me about 1/4 the value of the car to get this 'kin thing repaired.

Thanks Paul, but the more I review the situation the less I feel it can be repaired. The crown wheel|PLS|pinnion are total junk. All the bearings have been wrecked. Most of the gears have been eaten into and I've even managed to damaged the alloy casing of the box itself ! Only a few parts from my own box are salvagable.

The box blew on the motorway doing excessive speed . I then limped off the motorway and happily ground all the metalic paste that use to be oil around the rest of the box. Stupid I know but I had junior and passengers in the car and I really wanted to get the little lad home as it was late anyway. I figured the box was pretty much dead before I limped home so what difference will it make anyhow. (You don't want to experience a box blowing at high speed believe me !)

I think I will have to go with the new box, I have to get if fixed pretty soon as well. Its my only (working) car and the A6 I have snaffled from work goes back to its original owner in a week http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/sad1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >

Sorry to hear about you mashed box.
On a lighter note now half sorted out by nosiey front end. The blokes who fitted my new shockers cut off too much of the top of the strut, therefore the shocker was moving around, thus making the bagging noise. Got some Evo 3 shockers but the strut was too wide for the insert so carnt convert these. I am now running around on Evo 3 shockers with lowered springs from the Australian kit. Sorry if dosnt make much sense some people but ive being whinging on about this for months. So far spent over £1500 on suspension and im now further back than when I started.
Cars are such pains in the arses.

Need-a-part in Oldham might have a second hand box - they've definitely broken an Evo2. (Can't find the number)

Make sure it's the right one. The W5M33 boxes have different ratios depending on the model.

Glad to hear it Al, at least you are making some sort of prgress.
A new E1 box is going to be around the £1700 including VAT according to the garage |PLS| fitting |PLS| the time they have spent removing the old box. It would be sensible to have them check the clutch as well whilst it is out.

Any second-hand box I get I would have examined and fixed anyway so I may as well go for a brand new, warrantied box for my peace of mind for only a bit more.

I've still no info that says any of the Evo 1-3's have a front LSD. And mine definatly does not drive like it has one - IE power understeer if a get it right (wrong http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/biggrin1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle > )

Don't throw all the bits away!
The Viscous Couplings are more than a few quid if it's still in good order.
If the shift forks are OK they are a good upgrade for an E39 VR4 - steel not alu alloy.

My info is that the 2 and 3 GSR both have 1.5 way rear LSD and open front diff.
GSR Evo 1 has ? way rear LSD and open front diff.
RS 2 and amp; 3 both have 1.5 way rear LSD and ??? front diff
RS Evo 1 has 2 way rear LSD and front ???

Evo 2 and amp; 3 gearbox is W5M33-2-UPYE.
Evo 1 W5M33-?-????.

Evo 4 on RS models have helical type front LSD and 1.5 way rear LSD (AYC optional).
VII and Makinen GSR and RS both have helical type front LSD.

GSR models AYC rear - front ???.

Anyone know any better?

That place Need-A-Part , well i've got the box from that E2.
By the way the two E2 gearboxes I got have front LSD's. The one i got from Oldham is sitting in my garage and is complete minus the centre diff. The one i have in my car also has a front LSD, Both cars where GSR models!.

I did have my gearbox blow at high speed (75mph) on the motorway, the centre diff siezed and the rear wheels locked solid!!. This caused a 360 degree spin!!, luckily the road was quiet apart from one old folk that who i had just overtaken. Funny that he just slowed and stared at me then just drove on probably thinking i was a joy-rider while i sat in the car with a serious dose of the runs[img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/sad1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >.
Anyway £1700 isn't too bad for peace of mind and if you wan't a front LSD you know who to call [img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/wink1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >

From my experience:

E6 GSR
Rear - AYC, Front - whatever the factory decided to fit on the day!

The GSR should only have an open diff as standard but apparently they ran out of the open diffs when assembling the E6's and fitted the Helical LSD instead until resupplied with open diffs again. My E6 GSR has a front Helical LSD.

I do know for sure that my Evo 1 GSR has a front LSD. It could have been put in by a previous owner in Japan however as they aren't supposed to have them.

Hmmm... RWD box eh? I wonder how that would go in my MGB shell with an Evo engine shoe-horned in.... fastest MGB in the west !

Bah ! Latest news was that the new Mitsubishi supplied gearbox had a fault on 5th gear.
Still waiting to see when I can get the car back - good job the boys fitting it did a thorough test instead of saying 'fixed, gimme money'

Not sure, they were going to pull the cover and check it on Saturday but were unable to do so as they had an E3 rally car to prep for an event, and the rally cars take priority.

The mechanic says that it sounded like the bearing was about to break up (ie no oil). He wanted to rip the box out, send it back direct to Mitsubishi and just fit another new one. But Mitsubishi being the customer-orientated people that they are http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/biggrin1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle > told him they won't accept it back until the garage have popped the plate and had a look to see what is wrong with it.
The buggers.
I'll know tomorrow.

PS: I asked if they knew better about the exact cause of my orignal gearbox failure and I quote: Well the Evo gearboxes are virtually bullet-proof as they are group N spec, but I've never seen one as knackered as yours even in the rally cars. God knows what happened ! ) LOL, ah you've gorra laugh.
