Think from previous threads we had all just about guessed what the out come was going to be.

Would have been interesting to throw in a well modded but not silly money VIII MR such as MRFQ340's old car in for comparison as well - just to demonstrate what a standard car plus a few simple mods can achieve for a lot less cash.

Just a thought but wouldn't the best mod you could do to a 400 be throw away the turbo and fit a standard unit plus BB and remap acordingly - bet you would still get the same HP and torque figures but get rid of all that lag ?

Got mine this mornig good write up.

i would have to agree with you on that TCB im know car boff but it does seem that the turbo does let the 400 down, wonder what it would be like the 340/320 turbo?

The article concentrated on comparing 2 official 'production' models as it would be never ending if you start throwing modded cars into the mix.

Out of interest we also did the same tests with my car which is quite similar in spec to the FQ400. i.e. same engine pretty much as the FQ400, but standard BB turbo. My car also runs very similar BHP to the FQ400 as well, but has a lot more torque.

I'll post the Datron graph when I can, I'm away at the moment. The advantage it pulled out over the FQ400 was about 2 secs or 80 metres in the 40-120mph test.

An excellent article Dave

Some real technical comparisons here

I love graphs, they give a more informed view

In the future dave do you see Datron days supperceeding RR days?

A new debate

The only downside of the comparison was the fact that the MR FQ340 had a minor mod called 'the decat'. Believe me, this made a hell of a difference to the spool up of the MR FQ340 before and after once installed.

Invalid comparison I'm afraid. :(

read artical and as thought test seem to be geared to play on 400s spool up time imho :( and not a standard 340 either  i have been up against a 340 in my car i beat him to 6o and beyond, and i have ridden in a 400 and have no doubt that it would waste my car... :D on a lighter note where was the 0 to 180 test wonder who would win that

It was an interesting read, however a few things confuse me so maybe someone could explain:

1) In the 50-120mph 5th Gear acceleration comparison chart, the 340's rate of acceleration goes up and down like a whores drawers. Why so ?

2) In 85-120 5th gear test, the 400s rate of acceleration drops steadily and yet the 340 seems to pick up near the end.

3) As both (1) and (2) are in the same gear, how comes the 400 picks up towards the end of 50-120 but not at the end of the 85-120... that makes no sense at all (the 85-120 test should be an extrapolation of the 50-120)

4) Am I being picky ?

I reckon some of us should club together for a Datron and the hire it out for members to use either individually or for meets. How much are they ?

James, it says in the article that the MLR are buying a Datron to hire out to club members anyway - your prays are answered :)

So...just buy a FQ340 & stick a £50 de-cat on it!

Performance of a FQ400 (without the lag) & £14,450 saved...:p

Oddly enough BillyT wasted me with his GEMS equipped FQ300 but once I got the decat he just couldnt keep up through the gears (above 110 he was toast), though it may have been a problem with his mapping.
