How easy is it to replace the fuel tank w/o dropping the tank by going at it from above.

How much work is involved in removing the seats and gaining access???

fuel pump

Hi mate,

Did it this way myself sort of, you have to drop the prop shaft down, and let the tank drop slightly (Rich W's site made it sound so easy removing it) but my tank would not drop off the rear mounts.

The biggest problem doing it this way, is disconnecting the small balance pipe, and removing the pump itself, as its got a welded pipe around 10" long on top, if that makes sense??

Seat out and remove two metal covers about 2 mins, rest of the job isn't that bad, just a bit fiddly if your use to twirling some spanners I'd give it ago, did mine myself, but as said the tank has to drop down.

As above, was a bit fiddly, but not too difficult, lower the tank as much as poss.

Cheers, one thing tho. Is disconnecting the prop easy with no special tools requied???

Also ive been told that the actual fuel lines will need cutting as they cannot be disconnected as are solid. I gather these are just re-connected using somehose and jubilees's?

Want as much do's and don'ts on the matter before i start as hate those jobs that only reveal the issues 1/2 way through when and it starts to rain and gets dark etc etc.

Also what sort of time scales are we talking? do the seats come out easily? And can the whole job be done with minimal tools ei. spanners, pliers etc etc.

Sorry about that Paul - i found that on the GSR the tank drops easily but the RS has a different rear diff which gets in the way so on those you have to get access from under the rear seat (which is easily reomved by pulling on the two little handles at the front of it, and pulling the seat upwards at the front at the same time).

Its that long ago i'm struggling to remember how we did it through the inspection hatch, but we certainly did it without cutting any pipes, although it its tight.

The prop shaft does not require any special tools to remove it.

Good Luck! :)

Yes all seems about right so far, also, as forgot in original post, my fuel lines were just push fit connectors at one side of the tank, as Rich says prop is 4 bolts, and i just disconnected one of its hanger bearings nearest the tank. All in, I would think 3 - 4 hours is reasonable.

One problem I had was that I accidentally cut through the balance pipe after trying to remove it through the seat base holes,(6mm reinforced petrol pipe required) as this was quite awkward, as you just cant see, but this may be due to the RS diff as mentioned, in which case it should be easy for you :D

cheers, forgot that woz there read it some time ago..doh!

One thing Andy, do u actually need to support the tank when its partially dropped ie. with a trolly jack or something or does it stay supported with the 4 screw just loosened?

Gonna be tryng this on myself but will have some1 to hand if needed for assistance?

I don't think we supported it (it was a while ago though and my memory ain't what it used to be :D ) but it's probably worthwhile doing it on a GSR as with the RS rear diff, it's supported with the actual diff hanger which is different to the GSR.

BTW two other things you might be doing already, I(after running til fuel light comes on emptied the rest of the tank via the two bolts on the botton of each section, and don't forget the pump is in the passenger side of the tank, never realised or read that before removing the wrong bit  .

When fitting mine, I dropped the tank enough to get the pump out from under the car. The only thing i left connected to the tank was the filler neck so I needed to support the tank.

When fitting in the new pump just check the wires. I got my walbro from flat4online and the new connector supplied was wired the wrong way. It's probably a good idea to check it pumps before you put it all back together.
