Finally Started My Uk TME Underbody Restoration.

After viewing several impressive restoration projects on the MLR recently Ive finally plucked up the courage to start mine !

The plan being a complete underbody restoration, down to bare metal, rustbullet, paint (red, black and white) various parts to be blasted and powder coated, new bolts, bushes and other new bits as needed !!

Managed to bag myself a Bradbury 4 post lift from my mechanic friend who was upgrading to scissor lifts. Should make the whole job easier ! Had to buy and fit an inverter to convert to 3phase but with a lot of help from Sean a fellow Red Mak owner this was soon sorted !

Progress is going to be steady due to work and family commitments , and the fact I want it damn near perfect !

I will post the updates as and when they happen , a few photos below show this afternoons progress. A few parts removed and half a tank of super unleaded drained !

To be honest I was really worried about what may lay beneath - considering its a uk car ! Yes there are areas of surface rust underneath the underseal but the floor pan and sills look pretty decent considering . Hopefully will be getting down to some serious underseal and rust removal soon :smthumbup

Little bit of progress over the past couple of months. Work had been very busy which is good for the Evo funds !

Engine bay pretty much finished now, oem alarm system refitted , refurbished strut brace and the vin plate back on...

When I started the project I had the rear sub frame powder coated , and the rear diff painted . To be honest they were awful just didn't look right so all sent to Dave Cee to be blasted back to the original finish and all the nuts and bolts plated. Quite a big job to do this properly , all the internals had to be removed and the bare cases sent to Dave. Blast media can get everywhere and wouldn't do the internals any good at all ! All built up and ready to fit ...

All back on nicely , with the refurbished prop and drive shafts fitted. I did the prop shaft with POR15 semi gloss ... fantastic stuff. Dave sorted the driveshafts.

Brakes next , another Dave job ! BCS supplied the paint they call it Evo red. I believe they scanned a brand new set of Evo callipers to get an exact paint match.

New oil cooler and pipe work fitted , head lights and indicators removed and sold as new ones have arrived ...

So what to do with the old original callipers?? A can of VW Tornado red spray paint, some cheap brembo decals and turn them into cupboard door handles...

Rears used on the wall unit , fronts used on the base unit (car is too close to the base unit to get a decent photo)

Another little garage project was a slight clock modification ... it just wasn't the right colour scheme ! ...

This looks better ...

A few little things to sort but getting closer now !

A few more jobs completed on the resto project recently...

Refurbished Ralliart exhaust system fitted ...

Brand new headlights and indicators fitted ...

Triple gauges and radio wired up , cigarette lighter bulb replaced ...

Not guilty on this ... someone previously had tried to remove the fog light switch with a pick axe I reckon.. so that was sorted with a new panel and switch surround ...

Cluster cleaned and brand new glass fitted ... didn’t take a photo of the new glass .. forgot ! But it’s much much better.

Cam cover was a bit dull so I removed it and treated it with this stuff. Eagled eyed readers may have noticed the the Ralliart oil cap logo has been removed and refitted straight rather than the 45 degree angle it was previously!

The car has also been started and run up several times for the first time in 6 years nearly everything seems well and working as it should do . Even the oem alarm system is behaving. Just need to sort the horns out that seem to have decided to retire !

Just a few more jobs to sort .. arch liners once the horns are sorted (replacement horns are on the way)

New door cards to fit and other interior trim parts soon. Getting there slowly!!

if you talked nicely to RustyNail you could have a new project ;)

I’d love to do another .. but parts are becoming harder to find ! I’m glad I started mine years ago while most stuff was still available.

But yeah that’s a project worth doing

Thats true, harder to find = more expensive
Bit of a bigger challenge was refurbing the Ralliart pedals that had seen better days , I suspect being on the car since new. The plastic inserts on the accelerator and brake pedals were quite badly worn, and generally all looking sad.

So Dave managed to machine new plastic inserts, produce identical ralliart decals and make them look like new again ! To say Im mega happy with the results is an understatement!

Hate to reply to this post a year later, I've got a set of these pedals for my car. Any chance any extra decals were produced?
As above!
