Hi all,

I've just had a new clutch installed last week. It was recommended for my FQ400 by Exedy as being able to handle the 390lb/ft torque. It was installed by a very reputable company who are adamant the install went perfect. Having worked with WRC for over 20 years they have specialized on Lancer Evo's and prepared cars for the likes of Tommi Mäkinen and won many WRC titles.

In first gear and reverse there is a very pungent smell from the clutch disk, after 4-5 stop/starts or reversing with steering fully locked on the smell fills the cabin. The clutch pressure plate handles the torque perfectly, it does not slip under hard acceleration. Never revved, clutch never dropped the car has now done approx.. 240miles with the new clutch,

I would just like to find out how many out there have experience with the Exedy HD Organic clutch and how many people have had issues with it. Was it an initial issue that bedded in or did it continue throughout it's life. Also how many miles did it cover.

Questions are:

1. Have you had Exedy HD organic Clutch.
2. Where did you purchase it? eg. reputable company or eBay and possible copy.
3. Did you have issues?
4. What issues?
5. Did you report your issues to Supplier/Exedy?
6. Did the smell wear off
7. How long did it last?

They have replied to my email indicating I am not happy with the product saying and I quote:

Good afternoon

I appreciate your client's frustration, however it is all based on the unfair assumption that the install cannot possibly have been imperfect and unfounded internet myths and hearsay regarding our products.

There are no known current issues or previously reported issues with this kit.

Please submit the warranty claim as advised in my previous email, and also advise your client that in the unlikely event that Exedy Clutch Europe Ltd. or Exedy Corporation are deemed to be at fault, appropriate reimbursements will be made.

Best regards

I have attached the warranty claim form for you.

I would appreciate anyone's experiences be it as a end user, installer etc. They say there are NO REPORTED ISSUES I would like to know if anyone has reported issues, be it to garage, supplier or Exedy. :wallbang:

Thank you

Gav, That explains a lot. I have had a read about reason for usually having cushioning under friction surface and will adapt my style, I had an Exedy Stage 2 4 Paddle before so got used to that, I just thought with an organic reversing out of garage and applying full lock wouldn't result in smelly clutch.

It's still perfect once driving and smell from setting off has worn off. Hard acceleration this morning and took the power till I had to stop at a cross roads on a slight incline.

Hmmm, really not sure what to do Exedy customer support is pretty poor thus far we will see...

Yes, pink box from supplier, but from Exedy so not a cheap eBay copy.

The pressure plate is clamping the disk, and there is no slippage once fully engaged. It is just at initial setting off in First/Reverse. It gets hot and smells so so quickly.

I'm trying to identify if Exedy are aware of issues with this clutch disk, they say they have NO REPORTED cases.

The pink box exedy clutch is pretty infamous on forums with not lasting.

I bought an evo 5 a couple of years ago that had a brand new one fitted. The clutch lasted the journey from Coventry to Glasgow lol. When I got home it was stinking, booked it in for a twin plate and only used it a couple of times and when I got it to my tuner he had loads of hassle getting it off. It had literally fused together and needed a crow bar to remove. When it came out it was a right mess.

Can't remember where the last owner got it from but all the receipts for fitting etc where present when I bought it.

Hmmm, not good :( I feed duped out of £522 for the clutch and £500 for the labor... Any more out there? If I am going to go back to Exedy I need to prove to them this is not the first case and it is not all as they say 'Unfounded internet myths'

Quick update.... 20+ days on and the clutch disk has bedded in very well. Smell has worn off, I still think it would get too hot if I got stuck on North Circular but so far been great in light traffic. Like [email protected] indicated no cushioning results in lack of heat dispersal so don't slip it, treat it like a paddle clutch.

Handles the torque extremely well for an organic, much easier to use as a daily driver and enjoying performance without the loss of drivability. I've adjusted how I set off slightly, zero to no additional revs and pulse clutch pedal it to get it moving, reduce slipping reduces heat build up! It's been fine since.

Will keep forum posted how long it lasts...
