Hi,

I've had a look through the forums + FAQ and can't find anything on this nasty little problem with my Evo IX.

Issue is that on turning, the car has developed 'rolling resistance', as if brakes were slightly on. The rolling resistance is worse at higher steering locks. On full lock on a loose surface, I can feel the front wheels (I think) skip a little across the surface. On a high grip surface, the resistance is very noticeable. There is a slight 'clunk' occasionally when manoeuvring for parking.

This is a pretty horrible fault that I can imagine is putting a huge amount of stress on something, but don't know what.

Seems to me like a possible diff problem, front, centre or rear. My guess is that the centre diff could be jammed in 'snow' mode, though the ACD light switches mode fine. No diagnostic lights on dashboard are on. Seems to be somewhat intermittent, though getting slowly worse.

I noticed this a few months ago and immediately booked the car in at Mitsu, but the day they turned up, the problem 'went away'. They bled the AYC system & did a few checks, but didn't come up with anything.

One other thing - this car doesn't get used much, perhaps 5,000 miles per year. Wondering if low use might cause problems, but think this is probably not low enough to be an issue. It get used most days, just for short journeys.

The car is due a service soon anyway, so it'll be going in to dealers again soon. But last time they mentioned this wasn't a problem they'd heard of before (and they do know their onions on these cars).

So ... anyone heard of / seen this before? Got an idea on what it might be?

Cheers v much in advance ...........

Fantastic. Thanks for the response Jamie. Any idea on rough garage costs to fix? Can the solenoid be removed / given a wash and brush up / put back? Or is it a new part?
cheers, Andrew.

They can sometimes be fixed hard to say if it will or not till it's removed, it is easier just to take the full pump off and make sure all the solenoids are free, they can easily be checked by putting a live and earth to them and see of they opperate as normal or if they are stuck.

If you put a pressure gauge on the pump pipe outlets, that will let you know if the pressure is still high, even if the solenoid is told to turn off.
It could be the plates in the diff are warped and causing some friction, and need stripping and cleaning/ replacing.
hope that helps, Rog

Thanks for that Rog. My local Mitsu dealer (Ware Garage) have found metal particles in the rear diff oil. Other diffs oils are fine. They're going to have a look inside the rear diff as this is the suspect at the moment. At £4,200 for the OEM replacement, I'll be looking for rebuild options if there is a problem :(

I'm not totally convinced it is the rear diff as I'm sure I've felt the outer front wheel 'skipping' on tight corners. Can't see how a rear diff problem could cause that, but will have to wait and see.

The car has done around 20k miles and has really just been pampered with regular dealer servicing and no track driving. So really wasn't expecting a transmission failure.

Andrew.
