Evo 8 GSR Fast Spool Turbo Upgrade help please!

Hello MLR members,
I am a newbie to this forum, have purchased my Evo 8 GSR less than one month ago.
Just had a major engine service, including all the belts, water pump and more...
The car has a full Target Evolution exhaust, including metal kat, and an Ecutek remap. Other than a Mishimoto new radiator I installed, the engine is stock. These jobs have been carried out by the previous owner, that claims the car is putting down 330hp.
As a former rally driver, I am a bit dissapointed with the turbo's spool, full power comes on at about 3500rpm.
Coming from here, I was thinking of going with the following mods, what is your opinion?
-New Turbo with better spool (maybe Evo 6,5?)
-Full hard pipe intercooler kit
- Would kelford 264's affect my spool in a negative way?
I am looking to stay in the 330-350hp bracket with top reliability...
Thank you for any knowledge you wish to share, ;)

The Gsr turbo is crap.

You can either go more aggressive cams like kelfords or cheaper MR cams. If you want to stay stock turbo, choices are...Evo 9 80's series or the tme/Mr turbo both good fast spooling.

3 port solinoid,3" exhaust and remap will see a quick 380/360 car.

just upgraded from the standard GSR turbo myself to an 80 series.....alot more mid range punch and pulls harder up the revs but a bit more laggy, if your wanting fast spool early in the rev range then a bigger turbo wont help.....id ring the neck off your standard unit or go MR hotside, and with remap/supporting mods you should see good spool and high 300's power wise

the only way for faster spool is go for a TME edition tubby..

or if your keeping within the 350 hp mark then something like a 71 series tubby supposed to be quick spool

or a Tomei one is very quick spool as long as you keep to 350 youll be good.. anything over that sort of power and your looking at 3500+_ before power comes in

also relaibility issue comes into play with these if you go over 350

The 71 series turbo seems to fit your goals.

The IX 360 MR or I believe the XI GT turbo have the better spool but lack the top end figures which most seem to prefer.

If your wanting more midrange and top end the 80 series would be the route but to get the maximum out of that your gambling on the internals.

IF and it's a big IF you wanted better spool , better midrange and better top end you need to look at aftermarket turbos like the HKS KAI but with that you need a fair bit of work from your standard car to suit.

I have looked in to it, and probably Tomei Arms is the best way to go.
Starting from where I am now, I think my mod list should look like the following:
- Tomei Arms Turbo kit
- O2 elbow
- Tomei Poncam Type R kit, 270° (IN10,7 EX10,2)
- ARP head bolt kit
- ARP conrod bolt kit
- Intercooler hard pipe kit
Can I do without a boost solenoid and Blow off?

the key here is extending your power band you'll not get much earlier spool than the 9.8 you have now. i dont think any of the replies have really said that. all the other turbos mentioned will be more laggy but could offer better drivability

I'm with lee on this one. I've driven a 9gt with the 71series & it is QUICK spooling but, that has Mivec too. If your goals are upto 350-375.. leave well alone,

conrod bolt kit is a waste of time and money as is Arms and tomei poncams
Well I could agree with the conrod kit, but for the rest I prolly can live with loosing something in spool but earning an extra 1000-1500rpm up high in the rev range...
Also I need to get a new BOV before deciding, because this stock plastic 8 one on the car is leaking like hell!!

Ok, so today I got a new BOV and the car is now keeping boost. Hitting full boost around 3400rpm. I was testing the car on the ice track, and the Evo IX's were spooling much before me, plus putting down more power! I really need to close the gap...

Do this,

-get a used set of hks 272 cams
-a used or new good pair of adjustable pulleys
-a used 10.5cm2 hotside
-2,5" O2 elbow
-uprated fuel pump( walbro 255 is more than enough)
-tighten the oem wastegate fully, if it is in OK condition that is, or replace it with a 15 psi spring one( assuming that you use a certain type of boost control with it also)

Set the cams to +1/+1

Map the car with attention to spool and midrange, you will be fine.

And a tip on driving if I may, try to rely less on the hands and more
on your feet to control the car, if you know what I mean, also try pushing it a bit more. :)

If you want it to spool sooner without ruining it's ability to make power at the top end, try a small <50hp nitrous kit operated by a full throttle switch.
£ for £ nothing will make the difference that this does to how the car drives.

Alternatively (or along with the above) switch to an RS gearset, it won't change the spool (obviously), but the engine will be at higher rpm for a given road speed, so you are more likely to be above that 3500rpm mark at any given time.

Thank you for your engine modding contribution, I will take it in high consideration ;-)
Today I gave three turns to the wastegate pre-load, and the car has came back to life again! Currently I am convinced there is much to improve on the map side, but surely LICP, 255fp, boost controller and Evo9 BOV are in schedule!
If I can get reliable power with all the torque and spool I have now I would be very happy!!

P.S.: thank you also for your driving considerations. Fact is I didn't have the power to turn the car easely with gas, and I was running with ABS on ice, so even the brakes were out. In the afternoon we managed to kill the ABS and it went better. I will post a new video after saturday, with everything now working!
