Ive heard quite a bit about melted pistons on the E4 and that the internals arent as strong as the E5 onwards .

At what BHP has your pistons failed ?

Was it because of high boost pressure or high BHP with a lower boost setting .

Ive been thinking of getting an Ecutek fitted to take my car to about 330 BHP ,but really interested in the torgue figure increase.and mapping out a smooth curve on a dyno graugh .

I'm alittle concerned about the expense if the pistons let go .

Currently have the gromet removed and a decat pipe ,and the car drives very smoothly ,much better that before .

I killed my pistons at 15psi.

The only mods I had at the time was an exhaust and a cusco intake with a pipe from the front of the car ducting cold air into the air filter.

I think the main reason I killed the piston was because of insufficient fueling, as I had never bothered to check the fuel to see if it was ok after I had done those mods.

Shorty,

Have a look at this thread in the Technical Archive, it contains some useful information and also some small mods which can improve the fueling.

shorty,

my evo iv let go last week ( pistons) and the only things i had done to it were and H.K.S induction kit and a de-cat pipe.....
should be standard boost but would also be interested to know why this happened .. fair enough i was giving it max at the time but these cars are supposed to be designed to do this plus there is a rev limiter to stop you over revving them.....

An interesting read .
Reading between the lines Its bad news to take the E4 above 1 bar with out injectors and pump being changed .
The internals can handle upto 340BHp with higher fueling .

My car is running max 1 bar [as do have a boost guage] when the air is dense ,I have standard airbox which i'm not going to change.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with say a decat exhaust as this is removing gases .it seems to be the amount of air intake along with the amount of fuel being mixed together .
I had vta bov, blitz air filter, gromet removed on my previous E4 and stiil ran rich nice flames . Had no problems ran 296BHP on RR.

I had my boost guage replumbed last week as I was told that the way it was currently done would lean out the fueling .

I'm wondering whether to put the gromet back in .
What exactly does removing it do?

along time ago now but i once blew an evo4 straight after fitting an exhaust and induction kit.again same fault. Broke the pistons and destroyed the block nicely for me while it was at it

Also had this problem too, blew the pistons and con rods after only having the car a short time, only had the induction kit and hks blow off done at the time, replaced with an e6 engine and e6 ecu, hoping this solves the problem myself.since then the de-cat and down pipes been done, reckon it needs r/roaded and set up.yet to find somewhere south of scotland thats suitable.not many folk work around these parts work on them etc

AVA in Glasgow, Star Performance in Glenrothes.

Both have rolling roads and can check fueling etc, we have used both for rolling road days, do a search on the forum.

I run my IV at 1.3 bar. I have the following mods:

Walbro 255 l/hr pump
E6 cams
E6 GSR turbo
Straight induction pipe
HKS Super power flow induction kit
Decatted Blitz Nur Spec with 3" downpipe (had a decatted HKS Superdragger until 4 days ago)
Apexi AVC-R controlling the boost.
Denso Irridium plugs

I had the car on Star Performance's rolling road and got the following figures:

350 bhp fly
236.5 bhp ATW
300 lb ft

The fuelling was a little on the rich side throughout the run.

Thats about where i'd want to go, I guess picking up s/hand parts would make it pretty cost effective as well.

Well I'm not going to mess about with it untill I get a few parts together .
Or maybe look at the Ecutek with a new fuel pump .
Thanks for the info and input
Will look into it all a bit deeper when i get some cash together.
