moses ive been a mechanic for 25 years ,mostly big diesel powered machinery ,but the one thing i have learned is you never learn it all.saying all that, you,ve been around these cars for years. you would surprise yourself just how much you do know.and what you don't know you know who to call who does know.try saying that fast 5 times.agood set of tools,a service manual, parts book and patience and you would be amazed at just what you can do.was just talking to sam today about doing more of my own work on the car as mitsi don't seem to be able to do it.time to get stuck in my friend

sounds good bros i think maybe start with a very old car like a runabout strip the engine and learn it that way

u know john did it all in his 500 bhp evo and marked mapped it afterwards

it was a proud moment for him and was well chuffed :D and from that day ive been itching to try it myself

best start with a very cheap car me thinks

i was wondering what courses were available and what are the best books for turbo cars etc

have a check at your local colleges see what they offer in the way of night couses ,part time or correspondence or depending on circumstance, full time. only thing is these courses will probably start at the beginning . which means you have to learn to fix lada's before ferrari's. best way go to scrappy get an engine cheap strip it down build it back up replacing or repairing as required and then run the engine. flog that one and do it all over again.the basic bits are all the same, its the precision, materials, engineering, timing ,qualityall added up that make the difference plus plenty money helps.practice makes better. no such thing as perfect this side of heaven.books you get at any good book shop.all the tuner mags have good tech articles.always be ready to listen.the info is there you just need to look.if you do decide to try it give me a shout if you need anything, your only an hour up the road. God bless ,steve

Knowledge and experience count for a lot, but also it depends on what sort of person you are.

Being a perfectionist who is very thorough and patient, are attributes you need to build reliable, excellent performing engines.

You also need manual dexterity, some people just look akward when using tools, some are damwell dangerous!

You need to learn about tools and equipment and have to be able to use and read micrometers, dial bore gauges, verniers, DTI's etc correctly. When measuring down to .001mm you have to be accurate!

Your mindset is important, a 'that'll do' attitude is bad!

160 from a 1400 ? whats very poor.

My old tarmac rally car (by coincidence another RWD Fiesta!) used to have a 1396cc BDA - good for 179 BHP at 8600.

Cozzy were getting around 195 from their full race 1300 BDH's in the 70's.

Bless Ya!

I've just found one on the fundamentals of turbos and superchrging as well, so I'll pop that in the post at the same time.
It's a good book, large bias towards the american market but the principals are all the same.

Keep your Eye out for the postman. I'll PM you when I send it mate. ;)

was enough to win a tarmac series and many many single venue rallys and on 1 engine for the season .
