I can see how this could quite easily happen. On a dry day, if you launch a standard E46 M3 using launch control, a standard Evo VIII may have trouble keeping up. Trying to race launch an Evo is much harder to do while trying to keep your clutch alive at the same time.

The driver in the Evo in this vid is quite clearly a moron and knows little about driving.
