Somewhere in one of the long threads about warped brakes someone asked about dust shields.

Having given this some thought over the weekend and whilst sorting out the front wheel bearings on my wifes car I am not sure of the purpose of these beyond shielding the lower ball joint rubber from the heat of the disks. To illustrate on the wife's car (Montego) there were full shields (which I have now cut down) whilst on my company Fiat the shields were only over the lower ball joint. Is this just shoddy Italian design or some cunning plan?

Are the shields on an Evo full shields or do they just shield the ball joint?

It does seem silly to provide lovely vented disks to provide cooling and then limit the air flow through the disks with a dust shield.
