When driving today the power steering went and battery light came on, drove last couple of miles home and when pulling into the drive the stereo lost power and all other electricals faded.
Checked the car and found the auxiliary belt is very loose.
I assume this is the cause but if the belt is just loose what could be causing this and what is the solution please?

Broken tensioner or far more likely, the bottom pulley has failed, outer ring has gone, leaving the belt sat on the inner ring

Thanks
Can this cause any damage?
you dont want to be starting or driving it again until it is fixed. If the car was running ok before you turned it off, its probably safe to assume its fine so far, but I wouldnt run it again

Yeah it was running ok when I switched it off, haven't started it since so hopefully all is good.

battery will need a charge, and may need replacing, but the aux belt runs the water pump, and alternator, if its the outer pulley ring gone, everything will be turning slower, this will be compounded now the belt is loose. Same loose issue if its the tensioner gone. Obviously this reduces cooling for the engine (especially as its so hot lately) and the dwindling voltage will increase current draw until the electrics fail (as they did)

The pulley if failed will look ok, unless you know exactly what you are looking for

That description fits with what happened, temperature gauge was showing hot but it never overheated as we were only a couple of mile from home.
I assume the squealing noise on start up was because the pulley was starting to go.
Cheers for your advice

How come they don't include a check on the this pulley as part of the 45k service, surely it would show signs of wear especially by the 2nd 45k service interval?

Its not really a wear, its a perish, I dont think it would be that obvious unless failure was soon. Also its not an intended wear and tare part, its more like a part failure than a typical service item

I know this is an old thread but I have the same issues, is this the same part, the main pulley that I'm looking at in this clip? Am I correct in thinking the outer ring looks fine? Cheers :)

EDIT: looks like this is the pulley for the water pump... guess the pulley I need to check is the crank-pulley which sits much lower down.... :(

OK heres a close up of the crank auxiliary pulley. Seems there is not outer lip which keeps the pulley on. The ribbing also seems very worn. Am I correct in thinking this pulley must be replaced?

Nevermind the RAC came to look and found the crank pulley on the floor under the engine.... lol... going to replace all the pulleys now. :]
Lol, think that a pretty definitive answer. My advice, replace with a new standard mitsi item, rather than aftermarket. Its lasted 20 years, so its simply just wear and tare, as the rubber bond perishes with age

Been finding it very hard to source the crank pulley in stock, I ordered from Viamoto only for them to phone me saying its 4-6 weeks special order from Japan, same as Rosssport, they gave good info on BluePrint parts, apparently BluePrint parts with a C suffix are genuine OEM just repackaged, so I've ordered one of those as theyre in stock. Also got a new Mitsubishi tensioner, idler, water pump pulley, belt, bolts, etc. Might as well replace the other bits at the same time.

I'm just lucky the pulley failed when I was at home and not driving 😎
