Mitsubishi is to fit a semi-automatic gearbox to its EVO VII, offering drivers a machine that mirrors the firm's world rally car.
It's the first time any Lancer-based Evolution model has had an auto option, and it's likely to be an advanced CVT with a tiptronic-style function. The basic cabin layout will be taken from the recently unveiled EVO VII World Rally Car, and it features a centrally positioned gear selector as well as steering wheel-mounted paddles. Currently there are no plans for the model to be brought to the UK.

HH6, spot on. I read that it is going to be CVT and there hasn't been a good one of those yet. I here that this is the main feature of the 7.5 with minor interior changes! I bet that gets everybody excited!

Is that all there is new on the EVOVIII?. I heard from an importer - 6-speed box and GDi motor for EVO7.5/8.0

Just sourced a nice s/hand VII! Not Ralliart though - fancied one they had on the books but wasn't prepared to spend over £27k!

Great to hear you have found a car. I was told by a very reliable source that the current plan is to hold off the 6 speed box and engine developments until the 8. The 7.5 will have very little new other than what I have mentioned. However, there was an additional warning that it had not been finalised and that it cannot be totally ruled out that there may be more. It still needs final sign off but I would have thought that if they are introducing the CVT transmition, they would not want to make other serious changes at the same time, so it all makes sence to me!

As far as I know Jerry still has the MG on order and if I could afford it I would consider getting one!
There is too much talk of X car can beat Y car or X car is quicker than Y car when what you should be asking is X car more FUN than Y car!
I would definitely get a slower car if it was more fun than an Evo which seems a bit clinical to me. The MG with 385bhp to the rear wheels sounds like serious FUN!
Unlike Jerry though I will wait until I have seen some reviews or a test drive before even considering getting one, then again if Jerry test drives one and is unhappy no doubt he will cancel .

You only had to look at the Rally Super Car Day last year at Castle Combe, Evo's by the shed load with massive grip taking corners with ease and extremely composed and no doubt having some fun, then comes along a Escort RS2000 with its arse hanging out and tyres squealing! The RS2000 obviously wouldn't stand a chance performance wise against an Evo but the Escort was definitely having FUN by the bucket load! (you only had to ask the cheering crowd!)

....as for CVT, going on past performance there is no way that Mitsubishi could make a reliable CVT box in an Evo unless they upped the price considerably and dropped the performance, even then I would have extreme doubts about longevity(7).

Remember the Ford Fiesta CVT box of a few years back that only lasts 60,000 miles? (some even having to be replaced at 30,000 miles!)
How many MGF Steptronics do you see on the road? Why pay more for the same car but slower?

Anyway at least Mitsubishi realise they won't sell over here, let the Americans have 'em I say

Not sure I can agree with you, HH6. I think you are saying that sideways |EQU| more fun. Having driven tail happy, high powered cars most of my life, I now find the adrenalin rush of high speed cornering, 4 wheel drift, no massive opposite lock driving to be a welcome new experience. In addition, having a car that can pull you out of the most unretreavable situation just makes me laugh time and time again!

High powered RWD cars can become a real pain unless they are set up incredibly well. Very few have ever got it right. BMW have taken years to manage it and some say that to do it they have taken the fun out of the car! I suspect that there is more of a change that the MG will be an unmanageble monster, although as the last British mass manufacturer I hope I am wrong.

The MG ZT385 is most definitely on order, however I believe HH6 has put is succinctly. This is why I wanted a second-hand E7, as I anticipated keeping it for a year only. Why E7 rather than keep the E6?

I plan to use the E7 on a daily basis/commute and I didn't think the E6 I had developed was the right car to leave at an airport for days. Hopefully the Rover75 is sold today!

With the Rover sold I'm now down to one car and I believe the EVO VII is more apporopraite for my needs than a VI and more fun than the Rover for commuting. Which means a dirty VII charging up and down the M6, instead of the VI wrapped up in the garage all the time!

As for the cooments on rear wheel drive. If your views are correct than I may have to stay with the greatest 4 heel drive saloon car available today!

I often find myself in agreement with your views on cars. This kind of ties in with my thread about how I feel about trackdays at the mo and just going faster and faster through bends. I have seriously considering ditching both my cars which are way way more capabel than I am, and just buying something like a very tail happy bog standard 1.4K series De dion Caterham for lots of tail out action at a performance level thats well below an evo or 340r. Thing is I like cars too much
