If you buy audio based on looks then go for the most flashy, disco like one you can find which has lots of useless gizzmos's to keep you amused when your parked in McD's :D

If you are after sound quality then go for the one with the better components, sound etc :p

Alpine....

I have been "into" sounds for many years

I have the JVC one at the moment, it is a very very good unit and MUCH better than the previous Alpine unit i had, which was the top of the range model for 2003.

We're all different, especially our ears ;)

HU's and speakers are a personal thing and as you say, everyone has their opinion.
Alpine are popular but I agree with mud, I don't think they're unbeatable. The Blaupunkt Bremen is getting good reviews ATM.

Best advice, as was told me, as a general rule try to stick to people who specialise in that product.
Buy amps off people who specialise in amps (or electonics) and speakers off people who specialise in speakers ;)
However that's not to say that that an amp manufacturer won't surprise anybody by releasing a some great speakers

What to avoid? Anything that looks too cheap 'coz it probably will be :D
And purely my opinion but whilst they make good electronics, I don't like Pioneer, kenwood or Alpine speakers. But don't let that stop you, my ears might be fooked

The advice offered by people on here is good, look at what they recomend to buy, what not to buy.

Once u have decided wot u want, cheap place to buy is

http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/index.html

PS if u go into their shop in leicester they will fla u on price just as much as anyone else, chk their website first then they will honour the web price.

For eg an Alpine unit I was looking at £273 on the web, went into the shop up for £450 but "we can do a £50 discount on that"

Ooooh my type of post :D

I just recently swapped my Alpine CDA-9812RB for one of the JVC AVX1 units and I can honestly say it is like night and day.

first of all forget the monitor.... its just a bonus!

Sound quality of the JVC unit is fantastic, it has totally transformed my components (genesis audiophile 16s) with a much warmer, more defined sound. IMO Alpine units have lost a lot of sound quality since the 7944 etc.etc. unless you want to spend £2k on one of their F#1 status units...which really is something special.

Other advantage of the JVC unit is the fact that you can burn 1000 songs onto a DVD stick it in the unit and it will play it no bother....you never need another CD again, no need for a multichanger or anything!

The unit looks ten times better than the alpine's too, the oversize face doesnt look out of place and the 3" screen is fantastic quality....hook it up to a couple of monitors in the rear and your mates/kids will always be amused on long journeys.

The long and the short......go for the JVC unit....

I get the chance of lots of unit's at cheap prices but I decided to go for this one at full whack cos it is so good!

As for speakers....

depending on what you want to spend....

Genesis A16's (in my car)
Focal's - lovelly sound...however tweeters can be a little bit harsh unless set up correctly.
Dynaudio's (if you really want quality go for the 3-ways at £800)
Diamond Audio Hex's - can take a pounding and still sound sweet

I have gone for the A16s up front, 2 10" Genesis subs with a dual mono genesis amp and a five channel genesis amp running them all....install aint finished yet tho so cant comment on the overall sound...should be sweet tho!
