Fortunate to be in the position of chosing my next car, having just sold my (fab) EVO VI RS2...

Had my eye on a 996 C2, standard car, 98-R in blue. Would be my first 911 and after driving one on a track day recently hugely impresed, had already decided to go for this then was offered this.....

EVO 8 FQ300 2003 in black. Drove it today and was really really impressed by how much more of a 'quality' feel it has over the EVO VI. Does not feel as quick as the RS2 but more compliant/easy to live with.

Not going to do many miles in either one as have a daily driver for motorways etc.

So.. What would you go for??????

i'd go 996 as well.

lets get one thing straight-- unless you are an absolute driving god, you will likely be faster in most conditions in the evo.

but if other things count as well, such as build quality, comfort, rewarding RWD driving dynamics and all that, you can't go wrong with the 996.

i know porkers tend to come with all sorts of negative baggage. but that doesn't take away from the fact that they are brilliant machines.

and yes, nice choice!

cheers!!!

993

true...

you get used to the upright dash and all after a while. but the offset pedals and-- WORSE-- the fact they're bottom hinged is a real pain.

though i'd love a 993RS! :D

i would choose the evo

the 996 looks so much dated now that they released the 997
the early year models tend to have shitty interiors too

i was going to get a one too .
i would prefer a 993 Turbo

Had a 993 - got an evo!

993 (and poss 996) - old mans - mid life crisis - small kn#b - iv'e got more money than yow- low confidence person type of car!

well i'm not old enough for the mid life crisis (either that or i had it at 30) - as iv'e said in another thread my Kn#bs now big (and i now have the confidence to declare that!) but........i only still have the same amount of money in my pocket as i did when i was a student  think i allways will - I'll just get more stuff as i get older - but not a Porsche!

Love small Knob! :D

If you can't afford to do the Porsche thing properly, don't do it at all. An early-model 996 is hardly the most desirable 911 - they look cack with the Boxster front and they're not exactly the last word in performance. I'm not saying the Evo is necessarily a better car, but I'd be inclined to save the idea of a Porker for when you have enough cash for a proper one i.e. one with turbos or a GT badge. :D

I sold my 996 C4 2001 and bought an evo 8FQ, the evos far more fun, but neither was an everyday car, as they are both shite for that.

I'd have agreed with you until I drove one. Ergonomic disaster, like sitting in an old Beetle. I just couldn't get comfy with the pedals so offset. :blah:

Go for the 996. :)
Ah yes the 993 with its VW Beetle pedals that sprout out the floor , dont worry about that you do get used to them! I've had 3 old style Beetles and you soon adjust to that style of pedal.

having had 3 evos followed by a bog standard 996 c2 and now a 996tt, I reckon I''m well qualified to answer this one.....

You'll find the c2 996 civilised but a bit tame after the evo.

also I wouldn't buy one right now - prices are about to take a real hit, especially with an increasing number of issues with barrel problems and replacement engines at £9k even if Porsche give you their special deal... If you do buy one make sure the warranty is solid-gold !

My suggestion is to do what I did - bust a gut, beg-steal and borrow, and get one of the worlds best cars - a 996 turbo : worth every penny, and one of th evry few ways to make an evo seem "tame2 and even sluggish !!

These cars really are as good as they say they are !! Every time I drive mine it just amazes me !! its beyond words

PS. the 996 twin turbo engine is basically tyhe old water cooled lump from the GT1 car so it doesn't suffer with the problems that afflict the poor old 996 (and the 997 for that matter !!)
