BBC headline news today-
She apparently hit and killed a cyclist who went through a red light! Surely the cyclist (although dead) must take most of the blame anyway. Bit harsh dont you think?

i go mad when i see someone texting on there phone so stupid, the worse thing is they tried to hide it lower, taking there view away from the road to the phone and the next accident. i dont think its harsh, should get all that she deserves 4 years isnt enough, it could have been you, me, your family.

child murderers just deserve life.

What he said - there is NO need to text while driving - pull over!!! Nothing is that important to risk the lives of other people....

Yes pull over....but pull over in a SAFE place. I've seen many drivers stopped but taking calls/texting in hazardous places which could cause an accident too

The fact that the cyclist was going through a red light doesn't mean you are blameless. Despite having your light on green you should always be exercising due diligence to ensure you are not being a danger to other road users…even if they are driving through red lights. It's not uncommon for pedestrians to be crossing the road when your light is green.

I'm not aware of any child murderer getting less than 4 years though, maybe you could supply an example case?

Hmm yeh get yr point and I take that statement back. The Crete guy did it on the ground of diminished responsibility so suppose it dont count and I know he's not free just yet.

I also agree.
I dont its harsh she did kill someone after all.
They should apply this to 'text walkers' too

Plonkers are always walking into me whilst their faces are burried in their phones
I think cyclists that run red lights DESERVE to be run over.

It's sad someone died, and if the driver had not been texting perhaps they would be alive.

They would also be alive if they hadn't riden through a red light.

Fair enough in this case it's a kid so a bit different, but when I see adult cyclists just ignoring the rules it really does annoy me.

I think that's a bit harsh:confused:

Quick question? Do you deserve to die every time you exceed the speed limit? Or are you allowed to break the rules?

We don't know the full circumstances. A cyclist can't get through the lights as quick as a car. They may have just changed as he/she went through them as apposed to being on red quite a while when he/she decided to go through them. The driver could also have jumped the gun slightly setting off as soon she spotted the other light going to red. I see that happen most days on my way to work. Loads of people do it at J40 M1. You can clearly see the other lights go to red. The amount of people that set off then is unbelievable

We're discussing two different things... there are circumstances where I totally agree with you.

What gets me, is when I'm sat at the lights... clearly on red and a cyclist roles up, looks both ways and "nips through" - thus clearly, ignoring the red light.

I would happily run each and every one of the pr1cks over if I was allowed.

They moan about their safety on the PUBLIC highway (for which they don't get charged) whilst ignoring the laws put in place to keep them safe.

(n.b. On your other point, I think blatently running a red light is a MUCH greater offence that exceeding the speed limit where safe to do so)
dont be silly, cyclists are always the inocent party of any accident. non road tax/insruance paying ****

and ive always said if people cross the road on a red man it should be fair game to see how many you can hit!

shame someone has been killed especially a child, but both partys are to blame in this case
just actually read the news, it wasnt a kid? was 19...19 your big enough and old enough to know what happens if you cycle threw a red light. people were mkaing out ti was some young child...

and to add fuel to the fire, ive ran down someone on there bike before, he got it tight :smthumbup

edit.

"Mr Wickington, of Netley, Hampshire, who had not been wearing a helmet"

so no helmet and cycling threw a red light...

Quite... I don't see why the "motorist" should be responsible for EVERYONE else's stupidity.

People have the take responsibility for their own actions... be that a driver texting, a cyclist running red lights or a drunk pedestrian stepping out in front of a car.

At the end of the day though the cyclist paid the ultimate price for their stupidity in running a red light... no about of jail time for the driver will reverse that...

So the moral of the story is, don't be a retard on foot or on a push / motorbike... the driver might get time, but by then you're just another sad statistic & story on news.bbc.co.uk!
If he was over 18, not wearing a helmet & running a red light and got killed... all I see is natural selection doing it's job!

Moron!

That happens over here with motorbikes (not slagging them off, i have one!) but if there is ever an accident with a bike and a car, it is always the car's fault no matter what, they can't be seen giving bikes a bad name.
aye unlikely if he had suvived he would be on trial..only the motorrist.

i hate cyclists so much there just a danger to road users and have no right to be on the road

Yep... basically:-

If you drive a car, you are guilty until proven innocent.

If you're a bloke and a girl cries rape, you are treated as guilty until acquitted.

Two unreasonable situations in my opinion...
