So onto today....

One suspension strut....

Windy gun on the job....

To be hoped the spring doesn't fly off with the top mount, could get messy

Lucky it didnt

So whats changed your asking?

Not springs unfortunately, just new top mounts

You may remember the old ones i talked about last year...

I got the windy gun a few months back, but havent used it upto press. Well what a revelation! I've done a few spring changes by hand in the past, the gun makes it 500% easier! Soooo easy to compress the spring to get the top mount off. And also easy to undo the top damper rod nut too. Made the job a doddle. So much so it was done before i had a chance to take any more photos! Well, OK, i took a couple more....

The yellow circle here....

Supposed to be drain holes....

Needless to say i gave them a good poking out so they could drain water once again. This will be the reason the bilsteins rot on the 8's and 9's and fall to pieces. Gave the underside of the turrets a good coating of clear wax the same as the rest of the underside....

So all in a nice productive day. Interesting to see the difference between the old and new top mounts, the amount of flex the old ones had is quite considerable, no wonder they had cracked.....

Chuffed again!

In comparison like that yes, but in the car not so bad as the light comes through the rear window and makes them look lighter no matter the condition. But well pleased to have the new ones, they do look better

So April's update

One of things that slightly annoyed me was the door cards. Although in brilliant condition with not a mark on them the cloth had faded and started to come away from the backing - a very common problem especially with imports....

I managed to drop on a set of 4 from a UK car with the cloth that is in a lot better condition. The downside is that the cards are scratched in places and they have a few other marks too. I have fitted them and they are OK, i am in two minds where to go with it having recently seen at Japfest a set with the cloth completely removed. I might remove the cloth from the original unmarked cards and refit them, we'll see.

Old on the left, new on the right....

One definite positive was the inside window seals. You cannot see in this pic due to the iphone quality but the ones that came with the new door cards (top) are in brilliant condition. The felt is like new, and so if i was disappointed with the cards themselves, i certainly arent with the seals

Whilst replacing the door cards and window seals i carried out alittle preventative maintenance....

I know Lancers don't rot the doors but when you wash the car water gets inside them so i thought while it's costing nothing.....

Next up was the outer window seals. That hot sun out in Japan does nothing for the life of them....And i didnt realise it at the time as i replaced them for cosmetic reasons but the window mechanism is so much more smoother and quieter with the new felt on them...

Thats an improvement!

Cleaned the glass to prevent the new felt from being damaged straight away....

Well chuffed with the difference!

April Part 2 update coming right up.......

I was blown away how good the window seals look a Rich, awesome job. Regarding the cloth IMHO I'd take it all off and have it like Rob's Mak bud, but your car, your choice. If mine go bad that's what I'll do because again IMO it looks tackier when the alcantara is loose etc

The new door seals look ...a job we need to do...

The door cards look good with the cloth removed. I'm thinking of doing ours shortly too.. It's just getting the time

So next up the rear arches. Lets have ya.....

And whilst i'm on with it.....

Semi-Naked car warning!!!!!!

Covered the holes up to prevent glue remover from running down and getting in...

New arch seals...

Gave the inner metal of the door ones a spray with clear wax to prevent corrosion...

And then fired them back on, vast improvement...

Bit more clear wax oil into the mix.....

I continued on with the stripe removal..... in this next shot i have removed the stripe with the hairdrier, and i have a sponge soaked in petrol which i am running up and down the glue.....

Give it 20 minutes and a few applications before using a card or similar...

Comes off a treat! I tried all sorts before the petrol, Tardis, WD40, Solvent Degreasers ...... forget it. Petrol is what you need.

Cleaned up any remaining with polish...

Then i decided i would clay the whole car.....

Wow, wasnt expecting that....

NO Stripes!!!

So after waiting an age for a couple of parcels from Japan they finally arrived!

Just had to get the stripes fitted. In the mean time......

Gave the rear drums a lick of paint....

Better....

Decided to replace the tired looking original mudflaps. Bought some 4mm thick MSA Approved mudflap material....

Used the old flaps for templates....

Bingo

Not a bad job for £34 all in

Used the original clips but it would be easy to make your own...

Well well chuffed with how they've turned out. Half the price of eBay specials and better quality! Refurished wheels look the part too

So you may have noticed a little black box in the parcel contents? It was the centre console lid....

There was a mark on the original which always bugged me, better now, but at £29 without VAT or shipping not the cheapest of things....

And that's about it for this month, and due to other circumstances possibly this year, we'll see.

The car was at Japfest as you've probably picked up on. I was quite upset when the roads turned wet after being treated with salt, so much so that upon retuning from the show that very evening the car was up in the air for a clean....

Yorkshireman's skid for sliding under car.... good old MFI

Better (this word seems to crop up alot on this thread ....)

Finished off with a wash topside as the darkness came in.....

Hope you enjoyed reading the update

Good Work Rich, you need to get yourself another set of axle stands though before going for a ride on your dolly
