Evo 8 - 80 Series turbo with stock cams.

Hi all,

I have a evo 8 fq300, I will be fitting a 80 series turbo soon with 750-1000cc injectors. I still have the standard cams so my question is will I need 272 cams to achieve 390-400bhp or the stock cams enough?

Specs-
3” blitz exhaust
3 port boost solenoid
255 fuel pump
Intercooler hardpipe kit

Thank you

Stock cams should be fine for up to 400

272 cams are a bit wild for such a standard turbo ,your better going for slightly milder ones something better suited to an 80 series and youll get a better drive

I am in the same boat on my E6, just wondering if 8MR cams or 264's will do the trick and aid the 80 series in spool eg.

Unlikely, in my experience.

Standard Evo 8 FQ cams are good up to about 385 bhp with supporting mods, but I don't think anyone has ever reached 400 bhp on them.

My old Evo 8 FQ-330 needed cams to reach over 385 bhp with an 80 series, airbox mod, fuel pump and 3" exhaust. With GSC S1 cams (268) it was running about 405 bhp.

Evo 8 MR and Evo 9 cams are a different story: 400 bhp is achievable on them.

OK, fair point . I assumed the 8 would be the same as the 9 (I managed 420bhp on my standard cams on my 9!).

However how much real difference is there between a car with 385bhp and 400bhp..? So would the cost of purchasing then fitting some aftermarket cams be worth the extra 15-20bhp?

If the op really wants "400" then it sounds like they should go spend the money buying some, otherwise it seems as though his stock cams should get him a pretty decent fast car (albeit with only ~385bhp, but at least with some extra cash in their pocket...).

264 is better suited to an 80 series.
That will get you nearer 430 odd at around 1.9bar.
