Subaru Legacy STi S402 coming to the UK.

As an Aussie, I have always loved Japanese performance cars and bought one of the first Liberty tuned by STi's when they were releasd in 2006. It was a fun car but left me hankering for more, the first version sold in Oz was lacking Brembos and some of the other goodies that followed on the second version in 2007

Fast forward to a move to the UK in 2012 and I couldn't wait to get my hands on M5's, Maseratis etc as they were all totally out of my reach with Aussie car prices. Owned an e60 and f10 M5 but for my next car I wanted something that was not too large, solid reliability, had fantastic handling, AWD and was going to serve me well as a weeknd blaster in Snowdonia. It had to be a cool partner to the TME. None of the usual German options appealed. The more I looked and pondered I found myself full circle and back at Subaru. Months of considering varous WRX STi variants and the S203/204. Realising that these were a touch too small to fulfill the occasional family needs i started looking at TB STi Legacys and then stumbled across the unknown to me S402. I was hooked from the start and despite weeks of trying to talk myself out of it, bid and won a car last week in Japan.

Here's a few rough pics, she is a grade 4.5 with 42k miles. Totally original and in sweet satin Pearlescent white paint. I am in for along wait

Never heard of it - looks like a cool car though. You didn't fancy an Evo Wagon?

No my Mrs has an irrational dislike of wagons, Evo or not. The legacy is a slightly larger car and in base trim is more comfort orientated too. This will be the family chariot so it had to be bearable for 6hr hauls down to Cornwall

Thanks for the comments fella's These B4's upto 2009 really are the complete package, it's such a shame they completely messed up the Legacy for the US market with the hideous B5. Its hard to find much good info on these, below is about the most comprehensive listing of the S402 package but even then just uses market speak rather than offering any detail. I have read mention of rear door/floorplan strengthening, engine derates etc but because these were a JDM only release not much is around in English and its all a bit sketchy.

* Exclusive 2.5L DOHC
* Exclusive twin-scroll turbo
* STI air element
* Exclusive engine cover (with S402 ornament)
* Serial plate
* Exclusive tuned ECU
* Exclusive 6MT

* STI tuned Bilstein dampers
* STI springs
* STI pillow ball bushings rear suspension links (F/R lateral link)
* Exclusive 13:1 steering gearbox
* STI flexible tower bar
* STI flexible lower arm bar
* STI flexible floor bar
* Brembo monoblock 6-pot front (silver, STI logo)
* Brembo 2-pot rear
* STI brake hose
* Brembo 18" 2-piece front rotors
* Brembo 17" rear rotors
* Exclusive BBS forged 18x8.0J aluminum
* Exclusive 235/40-18 Potenza RE050
* Exclusive sports muffler (dual with S402 logo)

* Exclusive front grille
* Exclusive front fender
* Exclusive side mirrors (metal style)
* Bi-xenon headlamps with pop-up washer
* STI carbon front underspoiler with rubber spoiler lip
* STI trunk spoiler
* STI/402 ornament
* Exclusive electroluminescent gauges
* STI push-start engine switch (STI logo)
* STI steering wheel
* Exclusive leather shift knob (S402 logo)
* Exclusive leather seats (gray-black with gray stitching)
* 8-way power for driver & passenger seats
* Serial number plate
* Exclusive door trim
* Exclusive interior panels (carbon center console cover)
* Exclusive shift ring
* Exclusive cup holder ring
* Exclusive cup holder illumination
* Exclusive side sill plates (aluminum with S402 logo)
* STI carpet mat

I am a sedan man myself but I think the wagon is equally good looking. Only seen a couple for sale and they have all been sedans so not sure on the split of builds over the 402 produced.

Cheers

The car has finally arrived in the UK over Christmas. It has cleared customs and should be with Mike at Torque GT next week. I was in Japan prior to Xmas so had the auction buyer send all books and the gear knob to me while I was there. The car has a full-service history and all books including the original S402 portfolio.

Fingers crossed the thieves on the docks haven't nicked anything like they did on my Evo where they helped themselves to the Ralliart gear knob and rear speakers (stock factory speakers, worthless!)

That's what attracted me to it. We don't do many miles so I was looking for something fun for the weekends in Snowdonia. I had decided a WRX STi was the one then found the S203/204 versions which are a JDM only model with all the fruit and more conservative looks. Then I stumbled across the S402 and knew I had to have one

Finally! Along with a mate on holidays from oz, we headed south on Friday and collected the car from Torque GT. Mike and the team have been fantastic throughout, they stored the car for me for seven months, went over it carefully and made sure it was like a new car when we collected it. I also had TorqueGT do a 3 part Dinitrol treatment of the underside so the car will be well protected in the UK climate.

I am blown away by the 402. Its like a new 10 year old car, it was graded 4.5 but is as close to a new car as it is possible to imagine. It drives superbly, it really is a grown-up EVO in many respects which is what I had originally hoped for when finally deciding to take a leap of faith on the S402. However, paradoxically, it is superbly smooth and refined, much more so than I had expected. I haven't driven a Legacy made after 2006 so I don't know if the cars moved on that much in just two years, or whether STi made extra enhancements, but it really is a brilliantly relaxed but dynamic car. I am totally satisfied after 10 months of waiting. It is hard to imagine a better all rounder :wub:
