Here we have another shell restoration being carried out before it turned into just another rotten :mitsi: The 6 RS shell pictured below was imported around 2009 and was undersealed with the usual black stuff.... but after a few years of UK roads it was starting to look like it needed some TLC. One good thing about this shell was we knew it didn't require any welding, in my opinion if its full of rot then don't throw good money after bad like a lot of people seem to do :blah: if you have issues around the rear sub frame then sticking a plate over it is not solving anything.

The first stage was to mount the shell onto the spit and sand blast the under side and the engine bay to reveal the bare metal :)

Once at the bare metal stage we treated all the bare metal to a coat of Rust buster RB4005 epoxy mastic, this is the first time I have used the epoxy mastic from rust buster and I will be honest having used the rust bullet coatings on other shells I do prefer the rust bullet in terms of ease of application.

next job after the first coating had been applied was to seal up all the seams with Sikaflex 521 seam sealer...... very messy job :blah:

Next up was a coating of Dinitrol Dhronex 440 rubberized anti stone chip across the floor pan and inside the inner wheel arch's but not over areas such as where sub frames sit and camber bolts fasten ;)

I had this done to my TME two years ago, its the little things like clips etc that add up, remember they are now 15 years old and things go brittle

It is well worth doing though and gives peace of mind that the dreaded rust should stay away for a long time

For everyone asking the question of how much

Shell must be stripped of All running gear All interior to get the weight down for going on the spit. Glass can stay in.

Materials alone cost in the region of £1000

Labour really comes down to how good/bad the shell is to start with. On average expect to spend a couple of grand on labour. It is not a job that takes a week to complete more like a month :) I wont cut corners covering over rust it all has to be gone and the shell finished to a high show standard even if you are planning on using it as a road car, its just the way we do it
