Track Day Toy ~3k

Looking for ideas on a track toy options I've been knocking round are MX5, Civic Type R, Cilo 172. Looking at an initial budget of around 3k so I would have plenty choice, would like something with potential for plenty mods. I'd also consider up to an Evo 4 but prices seem to be on the up.

Anything else to consider?

What do you guys run? Experiences with a budget toy?

I previously had a track day Astra GTE so I'm no stranger to ongoing maintainance and tyre costs but don't want to spend a fortune maintaining a car that can't take track days.

Something fun to drive, I know I'll never be the fastest car on track and I'm ok with that. Regular rivals will be a Boxster S and a Clio 172 and I'd like to have a good go against those.

I went with a clio 172.

With some choice modifications you can easily keep with higher powered cars.

In fact now I think about it, I think it's the most fun I've had on 4 wheels sub £9000.

Brembo Discs W/Carbotech XP8 pads added with braided lines and a high temp brake fluid is more than enough for a lightweight car like the 172. With the Nankang NS2R made it stop amazing well.

Suspension wise, I had some cheap nasty coilovers already fitted, although with camber bolts and professional track set up even those handled well.

Power wise, all I did was a catback, ph1 airbox and decat and it was fast enough for most British tracks.

I doubt I spent £4000 in total but my gosh it was a hoot to drive. Fast, handled well and stopped as good as any other car I've owned (Inc the VI with AP's).

They are a good car out the box, pretty damn light, handle well and not bad on power. Makes a cheap, fun track car.

Hope that helps.

A Nova with XE is out I've already sold my old throttle body kit and I wouldn't pay the premium for a clean Nova shell. If I stay Vauxhall as I have a trade club account then there are a couple of CAT D VXR Astras within budget.

Cheers Midnight E6 very helpful advice.

Mk2 Honda CRX, light, fantastic handling and utterly reliable engines. Won't be the cleanest at that price but should be fine for a track car

Urgh I had a mk2.5 1.8 MX5 a few years back thinking it'd be a great track toy, never disliked a car so much.

Horrible gearbox, clutch judder, juicer than the Evo but slower than a bus.

Clio 172 or Megane 225 is the best option at 3k

What?! I have one of those and its the best car ever! I sold my Clio 182 as that was a P.O.S.

I get 30 MPG and its a pleasure to drive, the gearbox is beautiful especially compared to the clio that has no feel and the ergonomics of the driving position I hated.

If you can get a nice condition MX5 and turbo it for 3K that would be so much fun!

I'm in the market for a 172 or 182 as well at the moment, the decent ones soon get snapped up
