Big problems 😞

Went for a ride this evening, warmed the car up then gave it some, then immediately after a knocking sound coming from the front, then white smoke a few hundred metres down the road, pulled over and asked a friend to tow me home.

On closer inspection I noticed there seems to be a wire or something wrapped around the a.c pulley, it has stopped it spinning and the belt has continued to rotate around the seized pulley then causing the smoke.

It looks as though there might be a sensor or something close by to the a.c pulley does anyone know what it could be?

Has anyone else had this issue before ?, I wonder why it happened just after I booted it, possibly coincidence ?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks an upset shaun ☹️

Sounds like alternator belt has come off or seized due to a pulley.
Any pics

Will be a seized tensioner for the belt. It should be spring loaded and when it's seized it will not keep tension on load.

turns out the A.C pulley has seized and destroyed itself, all the windings have come out, not really sure how it works yet, still in the middle of taking it off

I had exactly the same thing happen to my old 6. It smelled like the car was on fire and smoke pouring out. It was siezed ac pulley. In the end while i was sourcing another ac compressor I just had RS belt put on which doesnt go around the ac pulley so you can use the car still. managed to find a good 2nd hand one in the end. They do come up as people like to get rid of them to save weight and tidy up engine bay.

the aircon pulley has an electromagnet in the middle

so when you activate it it pulls the outer pulley into the belt pulley to start the compressor up but unsure where you would get the wiring side from as its inside and doesnt rotate unless its welded itself together and pulled it round

Not really sure what caused it but the pulley was completely siezed and couldn't be turned by hand. I just assumed it was age related and bearings worn out as car had over 100k miles at the time. Like you I thought it was something super serious but all fine after new rs belt and then new ac pump.
