Conversion?

Hi, I went to have a look at an Evo IV and fell in love with it. However, when I saw the registration document it said that it was manufactured in 1990 with the chassis code "CSNC64" followed by eight more characters (total of 14 characters instead of the usual 17). I immediately assumed that it was a conversion so I lost interest in it and did not bother to check the chassis code written on the car itself. After trying to search for the chassis code written above I couldn't find any information either. However, the owner is 100% convinced that it is an original Evo IV. Any ideas?

I don't recognise the CSNC64 code but going from a 1990 base model would be a big task for a conversion as the chances are the base vehicle would be two generations behind the Evo IV.

The chassis number could have been used to make importing the car easier?

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

It is written that it was registered in 1990 as well so I don't think it was imported.

It's not even an evo then, never mind a IV.

That's the issue. I don't know if there was a mix-up in the registration documents or not since I cannot find any info on the provided chassis number in regard to what car it belongs to.

any LINKS to an advert or something a few pics inside and out will give use a better idea

while a conversion is possable it would be obvious looking underneath ,as while it all fits ISH there tell tail signs everywhere

Hi, hope these links work. The only odd thing I found about it was the headlights/indicator fitment.

As Aidy said, it won't be an Evo if it was made in 1990.

Looks like the VIN plate is missing so probably just had the chassis number "reused" to get around import restrictions and / or hide a stolen car.

Unless you can establish the genuine identity and history of the car, it's probably best avoided.

Cheers,

Simon

it looks a right thing thats for sure

the only way youd truly tell is look around te rear diff mounts for welding thats the only thing realy involved in a 2wd to 4wd conversion

one thing for sure its NOT a 1990 car so something defo not right

Ive had a google about and i find NOTHING that comes back as that chassis number

not even early lancers

whats stamped in the bulkhead, the rivit on plate can be faked very easily, the stamped in number not so and its obvious to spot if its been messed with

Definitely on dodgy documents 1990 is wrong in so many ways. Probably to make it easier/cheaper to register in Malta (looks like it's on Maltese plates)

Looks a nice car, my eyes say it's an Evo 4 with additional brembo brakes on the front. But like super rover said get your head underneath the rear end to check for yourself or even get a picture.

I'd ask or check the actual VIN plate on the car and see what that is. It should have CN9A for an evo 4.

If registering a jap import in malta is anything like registering one in spain it can be incredibly difficult so would explain why the documents are not right. They arnt right half the time in the UK.

I'd avoid, but I'm interested to see what's gone on

There is (was?) an active group of Evo's in Malta

Jon (4G63EvO MLR user name) runs a hotel - https://www.solanahotel.com/ - he also has an Evo IV

VIN number should be CN9A 010xxxx

Many thanks for all your answers. I called the local Mitsubishi dealership in Malta to check on the chassis code. No matches found and that particular car was known to the dealership (not in a good way). I am just going to avoid it and wait until a better one comes up for sale.
