power problem?

hey all, i have a lancer 2.0 turbo diesel sportback. 36,000 miles and 6 years old.
well i was driving along and decided to put my foot down a little bit to accelerate and noticed there was no pick up from the turbo. ive been to a garage and had it on diagnostics which they said their was a fault showing up on the turbo actuator.
A mechanic friend of mine said the actuator rod felt a bit stiff so he put some WD-40 on it to try loosen it as i was panicking on the cost of a new turbo + labour which i was quoted £2,400 by mitsubishi dealer.
aparently the actuator is part of the turbo and not just an add on? is this true or is that just a money making scheme?

The only way the power comes back is if i turn the car off and turn it back on. theirs no engine management lights, probably smokes a little bit more then usual but other then that theirs no visual difference. although ive noticed the turbo isnt making the pressure noise when you let go of the accelerator at high revs.

Turbo could have gone. Waste gate issue. Actuator might need replaced. Not up to speed on diesel turbo specs but usually the actuator is replaceable.

Well it had been on a diagnostics and they said there was a fault pointing towards the actuator, they didn't give me the exact fault so I left the garage thinking they was just wanting to make money. I was thinking it was a waste gate issue and like I said if I turn the car off it tends to sort it.
So if it is waste gate issue does that mean its a full turbo replacement as mitsubishi said replacing the actuator means replacing the turbo also as its one piece basically? :/
Thanks for the reply, any help would be appreciated as I'm not on a great wage and I've got a very poorly 10 month old baby at moment which means constant trips to hospital so the replacement needs to be as cheap as possible but also needs to be safe to drive while theirs something wrong with it.

What fault was described?
under boost ?
or over boost ?
Can you post a picture up of the engine?
With out the engine cover I'm trying to work out which turbo is fitted to your car!
If it has a electrical plug on the actuator! It can be replaced separately!

Theirs no code on the bill? This is what my bill/receipt/letter said-
"Carried out diagnostics test and found possible fault with the turbo actuator, requires further work to confirm which components faulty".

It's a standard turbo that comes built in when manufactured.
Ill post a picture when I get chance to get on the laptop, my phone won't allow me for some reason.

I've gone for a cheap option which a friend mechanic said to try and that's 2 bottles of turbo cleaner & some diesel treatment. Turbo cleaners called fortè if I remember correctly so let's see if that fixes it.

Im not 100% on the engines that vw supply to
But if it Is the common rail diesle engine you have .
purchase a mittyvac and connect vacuum connection and check the operation. If the diaphram has failed it won't hold a vacuum.
It's possible that the diaphram is split in the actuator as this is common on the audi a3
U can purchase these as a separate part from audi/vw

If I press the accelerator even a tiny bit there's like a click happening in the engine that I never noticed, it never did that before. Sound familiar to anything?

Your best bet to fix this is to find a good audi vw specialist
Local to you!
Theres a lot of live data you can utilise to accurately diagnose this
If your preston area I could help.
Did you check the actuator as I mentioned earlier ?

Unfortunately I live in York but thanks for the offer. Not yet just waiting on delivery of a mityvac, should of been here today.

Just took car to a specialist and the code they got was coming back as under boosting so he's advised to put terra lean through since my journeys are short it's probably clogged up. So we'll see result after

Did they check the actuator for you?.?
I do feel your waisting your time with the cleaning solutions for the minute
U may have a split boost pipe! Or connecting seal
A intercooler split but I do need you to check
1st the actuator
2nd the intake manifold ( vacuum controlled flap)
As if either of these have has a pin hole in them
You will get your fault your describing

My night job is a Audi mt so get loads of concerns like this. and I feel your throwing your pennies away until you get these common concerns checked!

I don't believe so? I told them a previous diagnostics test came up as the actuator but the guy said he had a car in the previous week with the same problem a mine and the terraclean sorted it. They test drove my car, did the test and it said under boost, they then did the terraclean, cleared the code, test drove again and said the code hasn't reappeared.
Well it's been 3 days since it had the clean and I haven't had no problems as of yet and the turbo lag feeling has gone so it's instant power again and the problem was happening on every journey before.
Might sound silly but is it an easy job to check the boost pipes, inter cooler etc for a little hole?
