Rod job turbo choice ????

Am in a dilemma which turbo to go for on a rod job on a IX with Kelford 264s. Uprated cooler, full 3 inch exhaust and tubular mani, 1000cc injectors.....all the usual stuff. I know this has been covered before and have looked through MANY threads but with relatively new turbos such as the MHI thought Iíd ask the question.

Question is turbo choice ?

20g upgrade to my 80 series ?
S205b ?
Owens / Ross Sport HPB IX ?
MHI from Ross Sport ?
Owens 71HTA ?

Any thoughts ????

So I also have a rod-jobbed IX with similar upgrades as you have listed.

I firstly went with a S205b which got me close to 500bhp. The car went like stink when on boost but tbh was too laggy, I ended up having to learn to drive one gear lower all the time.

Anyway, I blew that turbo up (), so was in a similar situation as to what you are now:

Refit the s205b (as TT replaced my blown up one FOC)
Refit 80 series which I had taken off
Buy something new, like HKS Kai

So after some research I decided to sell the s205b and then upgrade my 80 series to the 20g. I didnít really want to spend £2k+ on the HKS at thatís particular time.

Iím rather pleased with the hybrid 80 series, on the same spec as I was with the S205b Iím now 470bhp and 465ftlb torque and car goes very well, not like the s205b on boost but quite close but much more driveable, and the high torque helps a lot. Itís slightly slower to spool over OEM 80 series (maybe ~300rpm) though.

Iíve thought about going for the HKS but for some better transient response and maybe more OEM spool, Iím not sure itís worth the ~£3k the new GTIII version of the HKS would likely be...

If you want 500+ then the HPB IX would be my choice (as a stock frame turbo), but I personally think high 400ís is as good as you can get for these cars in terms of power and everyday driveability...

Iíd go for the 80 series hybrid over the Owens or MHI turbos as they all make the same power give or take a few HP except the hybrid is a lot cheaper.

If I were you id go S205B that turbo is the best stock frame turbo in my opinion and you can get 530-550 out of it if you were to size up on your cams eventually.

This is the thing.....I donít want to spend the best part of 2k + to achieve not much more than a rebuilt 80 series. Also donít particularly want to get a turbo that can pack more punch than a rod job can handle as Iím guessing HPB, S205 would be quite laggy when not pushing them to their full potential ?

How much are you looking to get the 80 series converted and where is best to do it ? Have heard of Midlands turbo.

Iirc midland are around £450 to convert your 80 series. If you have a brand new 80 series then OWEN can do ball bearing conversion. FP green would also be another option for 500 and goes well with 264ís. Yeah the 205 takes longer to spool but when it does it does the business. Sounds like a jet taking off too.

£450 for the conversion seems a good price and a lot of bang for buck. S205 is tempting though ! Just unsure about the lag compromise, but sounds amazing when on boost !

Not wanting to spend full frame money to be honest other wise Norris would be my choice. Is the HKS still available as I thought they were on the GT III now but not seen it for sale anywhere ?

Itís not horrendous just makes full boost at around 4.5k but when it does itís savage. Youíll get used to it and adjust your gear changes to make sure your in the power band when you need to be. The lag isnít like putting a GT35 on a 2.0L.

Can run around 1.6 bar for 500ish and 2 bar for 530ish with 272ís. Not sure when you use 264ís, might choke it a bit top end with those cams. Hereís a couple of graphs of guys I know with 205ís. Both forged 2.0Lís.

Says no longer available on Ross Sport, is this referring to the GTII presumably ? Not seen the III for sale as yet.

What are you going to use the car for?
Iíve had rod job on my old 9 and has reworked 80 series. That thing was spooling like mad! Lasted only a year. If itís done properly itís fun. Iíve also heard 7460 is good turbo as long as you donít try to find its maximum. Keep it under whatís recommended and enjoy it
